Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Luke Campbell - 31 August 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

:stop:

Luke Campbell is to fight Ukrainian star Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant WBC lightweight title in the UK on August 31.

The WBC revealed on Tuesday that a purse bid had been cancelled after terms had been agreed by promoters Eddie Hearn and Bob Arum.

The bout is likely to take place at London's O2 Arena, where Campbell has fought on three previous occasions.

The 31-year-old is the WBC mandatory challenger and had been waiting for an opponent for a title fight after former belt holder Mikey Garcia opted not to make a defence, instead being listed as 'emeritus' champion by the governing body.

His opponent Lomachenko, the current WBA 'Super' and WBO lightweight champion, most recently defended his titles against Britain's Anthony Crolla in a fourth-round knockout win in April.

Campbell last fought in March, defeating Adrian Yung by fifth-round TKO in Philadelphia.

This will be the Brit's second shot at a world title after losing to Jorge Linares in 2017. Linares, coincidentally, is the only man both Lomachenko and Campbell have on their record. The Ukrainian champion stopped Linares in the 10th round in 2018, while Campbell lost on a split decision.

This fight boasts three Olympic gold medals between the two fighters. Lomachenko won gold in Beijing in 2008 in the featherweight class, then gold again in London 2012 in the lightweight category. Campbell claimed his gold in 2012 in the 56kg Bantamweight division.

Fair play to Luke for taking another big fight. He did himself some justice in his losing effort to Linares but you get the feeling this will be a bit of a hiding for another Brit vs elite fighter.

Glad they got it in the UK, but I imagine that means it will be PPV.

Yeah, almost certainly unfortunately. Was hoping the show would be at the KCOM Stadium but not surprised by the O2.

I initially went with a Loma KO, but I think I am going to side with a decision and probable beating within it. Luke is a big lad at the weight and I really think Loma has maxed out at 135lb

Hearn said it’s definitely PPV in the UK.

Will likely be ESPN+ in states during the day.

Couldn’t make that fight otherwise - you’d be looking at 3m+ for main event alone - maybe more.

The long-discussed lightweight showdown between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Luke Campbell has finally cleared the final hurdle.

Eddie Hearn, Campbell’s promoter confirmed with BS.com that there no longer remains any obstacles or fine points in officially moving forward with the three-belt lightweight unification contest later this summer.

“It’s a done deal,” Hearn told BS.com on Saturday. “We just finalized terms and I’m going to meet with Luke Campbell on Monday to present him with the final contract.”

“We’re really looking forward to that event,” said Hearn. “An announcement should be coming sometime (in the first week of July), even if the WBC tried to previously apoil the surprise by saying it was official while we were still sorting out final loose ends.

“But both sides are fully on board, everyone is thrilled and I can’t wait to begin promoting this event.”

In this interview Uncle Bob dropped in that this is all sorted and the only reason it has not been announced officially was that Eduardo does not want it to interfere with ticket sales for Whyte as they are struggling to shift them for that one. Kuggie nearly shite himself hearing that beauty about his bum chum Hearn.

If you want to skip to it, 5mins 55seconds in to the video

Be great for Loma to come to the UK.
Hopefully he sees the reception he gets, the atmospheric crowds and more superstars come over.

He’s already seen it when he attended Usyk-Bellew.

You poms are going to be treated to one of the best boxers this decade fighting on your shores.
And not in some mismatch like Bellew Usyk.
This should be very competitive.
I'm picking Campbell by T/KO.

Yes mate. I got a feeling in my cockles.
Campbell- bigger, stronger, and well schooled enough to slow Loma's legs with vicious bodywork.
I'm not having a flutter on it because I see it as too tight to risk. But if I'm pressed, I say Campbell.

Would like to see Campbell pull an upset, but good to see him not go for a gifted alphabet title shot against a sure thing, like a lot of fighters today. I am sure they could have put him in with a Bolivian taxi driver for a worthless alphabet belt if he’d demanded it, but he’s testing himself against the best. Says a lot more about him than some of “world” champions we’ve seen in recent years

Which they were trying to do until Loma was controversially dropped on them. PR disaster to then pull out but Hearn did protest it.

:TU: There has been a real epidemic of these “favorite fighters vs bums” fights for vacant belts over the past 20 years or so. Makes the title “world champion” even more worthless than it would normally be with the silly four-alphabet group arrangement.

It seems, only you and me picked Campbell by KO in the poll, but I actually accidentally clicked on that option, I'm picking Loma by KO.

Luke Campbell Confident: I Can Beat Lomachenko By Being Me!

Olympic gold medal winner Luke Campbell (20-2, 16 KOs) is very confident in his ability to defeat one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, Vasyl Lomachenko (13-1, 10 KOs)

“I can beat him now by being me. By being tall, awkward, strong, fast and skilful. I have been in the gym constantly — even when I haven’t had a fight. I am so boring, it is unreal," Campbell said to The Sun.

"My brother was the best man at my wedding and his speech started with him telling guests that he had no embarrassing stories to tell because I am so boring. All I do is box and spend time with my family — but that is simply what I have to do to be successful. So I have already booked myself into rehab for when I finally retire from boxing, start partying and finally become interesting!”

Campbell has no problem with the WBC ordering him to face Lomachenko, a two-beltholder, for their vacant title.

“I don’t feel unlucky being part of this weight division in this era — it’s great. I have never had an easy route and don’t expect it now. There are some world champions out there who have won their belt by beating someone no-one has ever heard of. But where is the glory in that? To be the best, you have to beat the best, and now is my time," Campbell said.
