That fight is a solid reason to pick Thurman. Horn physically battered Pacquiao 2 years ago. Left him exhausted and bloody.

And while Thurman doesn't fight in Horn style, he's certainly more talented and multi-dimensional.

If Horn could abuse a 38 year old Pacquiao, Thurman should be able to handle the 40 year old version.

Archie Moore is the obvious answer here, and in an era where he had more ko's than most have fights.

Authentic boxing legend.

And where exactly do you put a +40 Archie Moore on the P4P list?

That’s good betting advice. However Thurman looked worse in his last bout against a very solid undersized c+ level fighter. I do think Thurman can win because he can go into coward mode and make it an ugly fight just to squeeze out the decision. Totally undeserved opportunity imo

Thurman needs to be aggressive. Wear down the old man. Old fighters hate a fast pace. They want to take it easy and pick spots to open up.

If Thurman lays back and gets into a chess match, Pacquiao can win.

But if Thurman uses his greater strength and youth, forces Pacquiao to fight when he would prefer to rest, then he should wear down the Filipino.

Speaking of betting, most books now have Pacquiao a slim favorite or pick 'em. Thurman opened about a -150 choice.

Sentimental money.

I also give the psychological advantage to Thurman. At this stage Pac doesn’t need money anymore. In addition to age he is already tired and has been in too many wars. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him give up mentally if he is pushed beyond his comfort zone. He has money, political relevance, kids and family and his legacy is guaranteed.

I'm pretty certain that he still has a pretty big tax debt remaining in the Philippines and US.

At one time the Phillipine government seized some of Pacquiao's properties.

So he probably does continue to fight because of money.

Yes I've read that he still owes the majority of the taxes he didn't pay for the Mayweather fight... and that was a big paycheck.

I think it goes back even further than the Mayweather bout. Last I read he owed more than $80 million.

He might have settled his US debt. That's the main reason he began fighting here again in January after a few years away from America.

But tax overseas has been a long term problem for Pac. Apparently being a senator and an idol in the Philippines doesn't get him any slack.

I think he's still top 10 P4P. The Horn loss was rubbish, and aside from that his only loss in the last 5 years was Mayweather. Also he's fighting in a weight class he's extremely small for and has been doing so for a decade.

I don't think he's the oldest ever though. Hopkins must have been on some P4P lists until at least age 45.

Well without spending time I don't currently have on deciding who the p4p top 10 were between 56 and say 59 I would say it's reasonable, in an era of far fewer weight categories, that the Light Heavyweight champion of that period, who would not only defend his own title but beat contenders in the division above, would be ranked in the P4P top 10 on merit.

Everyone thought Pac won, ie my notes at the end of the fight when you say Pac was exhausted and battered:

8. Pac 1-0-H aggress-P move and pic shots/H down from Rt but maybe feet tangle- No KD

9. Pac 1-0-H aggress but not as much-P pick shots/batters H around ring/H on shaky legs but not down

10. Pac 1-0-H aggress-P rest w/good combos/move-H still game

11. Pac 1-0-H aggress/grab/rassle- P sharp combos/H time for glove tape repair/tired trick by corner

12. Pac 1-0 H bull to ropes- P box well/H time for glove tape repair/exchanges favor P- H grab/bell sounds and P with furious shadow flurry showing he’s ready for more

By rounds my score was Pac 7/Horn 2/Even 3. Pac dominated the latter half of the fight as Horn tired and needed loose tape trick to survive. If I assign Even Rounds to Horn, that makes it 7-5 still for Pac.

By 10 pt must scoring, rd 9 clearly a 10-8 round for Pac, thus translating to a 3 point margin for Pac, or 115-112 by 10 pt must.

At Horn parade a few days later, his right eye is still a slit and his left has blackened. Manny had a cut from one of two Horn butts that was minor, but bled. When the the final bell rang and towels applied, the younger, fresher Horn who has taken almost no damage in fights previous looks like he came out of the grinder.

I'm taking Pac. Thurman may well be past it, but he still might pull out his one time signature punch that has proven feeble as his busted ribs in his previous 3 fights. Otherwise, he's gonna look as pathetic as TUE running from the 40 year old Senator for a roll of the craps dice Vegas decisions these days.

You're just being sentimental, picking an old guy despite all logic. Who knew you were that type?

The decision or how Horn looked post-fight is irrelevant. He still battered, bruised, bloodied and exhausted Pacquiao. Horn had no trouble catching up to Manny, pushing him around and belaboring him on the ropes.

All that, and Horn isn't even that good a fighter. Certainly not in Thurman's class in talent or experience.

Manny got by on experience that night, even if the admittedly poor decision didn't go his way. He still looked his age.

And now Pac is two years older and more eroded than ever. And he's fighting one of the best welterweights that he has ever encountered.

Thurman is bigger, stronger, harder hitting and much younger.

July 20 will not be a pretty night for Manny Pacquiao.

Archie Moore was about half way through his career when he turned 40.

I think you could argue Moore was P4P top 10 until he was 42-43.
