Ricky Burns vs. Jorge Linares - 7 September 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

According to the Evening Times, Ricky Burns has been handed one last crack at the big time by promoter Eddie Hearn.

Burn, 36-years-old, will collide with Jorge Linares in a battle of three division world champion. The bout is reportedly a WBA lightweight eliminator.

The bout will headline a card at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on September 7.

Burns was in action back in November of last year, when he blew away Scott Cardle in three rounds. There was a talk of a fight with Lee Selby, but that contest fell through. Burns has won two in a row since losing a close decision to Anthony Crolla in 2017.

Linares was in the ring back in January, when he was unexpectedly demolished in one round by Pablo Cesar Cano - in what was Linares' second bout at junior welterweight.
But Linares has a very good record against British fighters. He's beaten Kevin Mitchell, Luke Campbell and Anthony Crolla (twice) in world title fights.

Linares will enter the ring with a record of 45-5, with 28 knockouts and all five of his defeats have been knockout losses.

Last year he took part in the biggest fight of his career, when he fought on even terms in numerous rounds against Vasiliy Lomachenko He dropped Lomachenko in the sixth round, but then saw himself stopped in the tenth after getting hit with a hard shot to the body. At the time of the stoppage, the judges had the bout scored a majority draw with tallies of 85-85, 86-84 Linares and 86-84 Lomachenko.

Looks like Linares is deciding to stay out at lightweight.

Good fight this, but if Linares can’t beat Burns he should retire.

I take it Burns will retire if he loses this.

I'm in two minds about this fight, is it whoever has the most left in the tank will win, or is Linares just too big and strong for 2019 Burns?

I’ve been a massive fan of Burns over the years but he’s getting battered here if this goes ahead.

Im thinking the same - Linares looked shot as well in his last fight and was KO’d early.

He won’t stop Burns - he’s as hard as nails that way but it will come down to who’s got anything left in the tank.

Ive been a fan of Burns for years and I'm worried his toughness will make him take a prolonged beating. Both guys will probably gas around 6-8 rounds but I still think it will be a hard watch for Burns fans like myself.

Linares won't gas—he might collapse from an innocuous head shot but I don't see him gassing.

Burns is well liked/followed in Scotland. He’ll sell it out. Especially if they call it a farewell.

Aye can’t see this selling out myself either. Burns is done at world level and Linares is on the slide and not massively well known to many who’d buy tickets. Undercard would be crucial but can’t see a sell out

Me too. Who cares if they’re past their best it could be a decent fight. It could give the winner one last good payday.

Will still do good numbers - Burns is popular in Glasgow - with good undercard will be busy. Some locals will also sell good ticket numbers.

Taylor can’t sell out as he can’t keep his mouth shut and has alienated anyone other than Hibs fans.

Burns wasn’t as daft and played neutral stance which worked for him.

Taylor’s had great bills and still not close to selling what Burns has done over the years.

 I just had to Google Hibs.
A football team. Gighto, gotcha :TU:
It still baffles me about how someone's loyalty to a particular team in a different sport affects their fans in their own respective sport.
I mean, rugby is huge in my country, but no one cares who Joseph Parker supports or dosent support. In fact I would have to guess he supports Counties Manakau rugby, and Manu Samoa, and the All Black, but I don't even know because it isn't important.

Yeah but Taylor ran his mouth about Rangers/Hearts fans - giving all sorts on his Twitter,
He then removed it when someone obviously told him he was a idiot - but damage was done and it was everywhere by then.

Even the card with Inoue had tickets readily available - when you alienate % of fan base in your own country is stupidity.

Burns may be past his best but he’s never been stopped so I’m surprised there are more votes for a Linares ko/tko than pts.

A lot of boxers do use their local football team to help with support. Why all these local stadium fights? They then get on the pitch at half time etc..

Warrington is just like the Leeds supporters because he is one.

Bellew and Everton.

They’re trying with Cal Smith and Anfield.

Frampton and Windsor Park, but that had nothing to do with an actual football team.

Brook and Sheffield UTD.

Imagine having someone support your boxing career because you support the same football team. Football is by far the biggest sport in the UK.

Most boxers use that to their advantage.
