Mythical matches or Boxing history?

Post by chrisjs1985 »

Of the 44 threads that I saw under the pinned one's here I see exactly a whopping 22 mythical match-up's proposed. That's a bit much, no? I get it that some folks like to participate in what is basically a pointless discussion so maybe can we have a sub-forum for mythical matches or one master sticky thread? I know a number of posters who stay away because of the sheer volume of these matches.

It's not part of "Boxing history", is it?

Boxing, maybe more than any other sport, is built on the foundation of "What if?", and while I think the hypotheticals lately have gotten out of hand, it's not against the grain of boxing history since all participants in these hypotheticals are long retired.

I think a sub-forum for mythical matchups is a good idea.

When Jose Ribalta is featuring in mythical matches, it's time to take action.

Me too. I rarely read the 'mythical matchup' threads. I'll read and sometimes contribute If they involve fights that could've been made without transporting a fighter into another time.

There was a recent thread on a Cooney-Bugner matchup either here or on another forum. I thought it was a "What if the scheduled for late-1981 Cooney-Bugner fight hadn't been cancelled?" thread. I was totally baffled at some of the posts. Finally, a day or two later, I realized it was a time-machine fantasy fight thread. It was like, "Why did I waste my time and energy on this?"

While I wouldn't want to keep other people from enjoying them, I get a little frustrated that, seemingly, a good 3/4 of a given page are time-machine fantasy fights. I suppose there are some elements of actual history discussed, but there's really not much to learn from these threads. I come here to read discussions on boxing history, not boxing fantasy.

We see so many of these that people obviously like them. But they're not boxing history any more than any other speculative fiction is actual history. I'm glad chrisjs1985 spoke up and wrote what I've been thinking. Let's, again, put them in a sub-forum.

Yes, it's gotten out of hand. How can we propose a sub forum or master thread for them?

I mean I saw Camacho-Rosario mythical match from like a year before it happened. really? I don't mind if it's something like Trinidad-Mosley, Marquez-Morales, Famechon-Winstone etc; fights that we missed out on that could have happened but Gans-Whitaker? Conn-Calzaghe? Greb-Hagler? Come on.

Hi John, is the creation of a sub-forum for mythical matchups possible?

I wholeheartedly support this idea. I have virtually given up on the boxing history pages because of these mythical matchups. I don't deny that others find them interesting, that's fine. I don't though, and I want to read about, and post about, actual history.

John, give the mythicals their own sub-forum please!!

Yeah, when we’ve gotten to 50% (or more) of the posts being mythical matches you know it’s gotten ridiculously out of hand. Also, that mythical matches (which have nothing to do with history) are popular enough to have their own section.

Have a look at this thread for instance. Apart from the obvious "who cares anyway?", if one were to delve into it to see what could be learnt about each fighter, or indeed, just some genuine historical information, then what would one find? Utter twaddle from start to finish.

A sub-forum would be great. These what-if posts have gotten out-of-hand. I think lots of good topics are getting buried.

You could take the p*ss out of most of mythical debates all day if you wanted to. I just picked this one at random. Two all time greats. So much to talk about and evaluate.

It just seems to me that there isn't a lot of depth in what is being said. Or am I missing something?

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=230598

I mean, why bother?

Let's get this mythical thread sub-forum established so that those who enjoy these debates can continue to do so.

Just do it somewhere else.

I agree. At least most of them are between real fighters, not a bunch of actors in a movie.

Do you think this guy would have had a chance in a mythical matchup against Stan Laurel, or Buster Keaton?

I think he needs to work a little on his ring skills.

Good suggestion.

Mythical matchup threads can become wearisome because some posters think their pick in a hypothetical matchup is the definitive pick and no other call is worthy.

Every opinion is just as valid as the other, even if you don't agree with it and that's my opinion.

Once in awhile there is an intriguing one, but most of the time it's more like two names drawn out a hat. It is funny how confident we are about fights that they know can never happen.

It is frustrating when there is a good topic started and it gets drowned out by the mythical matches. Mike Tyson vs literally anybody is going to get more attention than most threads.

I agree that it should get it's own sticky whatever you call it like the West Coast Boxing thing. Those are in one place and really easy to ignore.

So how about it then? Is anything going to be done about this suggestion? It seems to be getting some support. Mods? Or whoever?

I have a concern, how will this affect the Bruce Lee - Wilt Chamberlain match-up? This issue is still not settled. :verysad:

Oh come on, Chamberlain all the way.

He once beat a close to prime Ali by signing to fight him, even though there was no fight.

Lee could never do that.👍🏽

Yeah there are too many. And pretty much by the same well meaning posters, sometimes a few per day.

It is putting me off coming here. I mean now and again it's fun, but these things dominate the pages.
