He got robbed against Fullmer in their first fight. The championship was much closer than the scores would indicate. You couldnt get a win over Fullmer west of the Rockies.

That was the nature of the beast back then; it was a regional game and everyone took care of their own. I guess today it depends what network; sanctioning body, or promoter you are connected to; nothing really changes but the date.

I just saw the second fight between Gene Fullmer and Ellsworth "Spider" Webb. It was a great fight. A rough and tough contest. Fullmer didn't make it easier for nobody. He was always in your face using his will and strength on the other guy. His fights were always the same pattern. He was hard to discouraged, and difficult to outbox because he was always on top of his opponents.

Webb did good, but I think that Fullmer was a little busier than he. His management team complained that it was a hometown decision win for The Cyclone, but I think that Fullmer won that fight fair and square. I had it 145-142. Webb could have been a world champion, too. That's how deep that era of fighters was. He stopped Joey Giardello, another great fighter of the 1950s and 60s decade.
