Shakur Stevenson vs. Alberto Guevara - July 13, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Eight days before his homecoming at Prudential Center, top featherweight contender Shakur Stevenson has a new opponent. Former world title challenger Franklin Manzanilla dropped out of the bout, and two-time world title challenger Alberto “Metro” Guevara will face Stevenson in the 10-round main event.

Stevenson-Guevara and the 12-round IBF bantamweight eliminator for the No. 2 ranking featuring Joshua Greer Jr. and Nikolai Potapov will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.

The entire undercard will stream live on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. ET.

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets priced at $100, $75, $50 and $25 (not including applicable fees) are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at 800-745-3000 and in person at the Prudential Center box office.

“I give Alberto Guevara credit for taking this fight when so many fighters won’t step into the ring with me,” Stevenson said. “He’s been in there with some great fighters, even world champions, but nothing can prepare him for me. No matter the opponent, I am going to put on a special performance for my hometown and everyone watching on ESPN on July 13.”

“When I was offered this fight, I did not hesitate. I want to fight the best, and Shakur Stevenson is a very good young fighter,” Guevara said. “The hometown crowd will not phase me. I’m coming to shock the boxing world.”

Guevara (27-4, 12, KOs), from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, turned pro in November 2009 and has twice challenged for a bantamweight world title, dropping a competitive decision to Leo Santa Cruz in December 2012 and getting knocked out in nine rounds by Japanese standout Shinsuke Yamanaka in November 2013. He is 9-2 with six knockouts since the Yamanaka defeat, with those losses coming against a former world champion (Hugo Ruiz) and a fighter who would go on to capture a world title (Emmanuel Rodriguez).

Second change off opponent for Shakur.

I hear many turned it down originally.

Not confirmed why Manzanilla pulled out. Money? Injury? Who knows?

Guevara is acceptable for a late substitute. Stevenson's 3 previous foes were relatively good tests!!

He can get some rounds in IF he carries Guevara.

By Keith Idec
NEWARK, N.J. – The thing Shakur Stevenson heard most from the dozens of children that surrounded him Wednesday was that they want to see him knock out his opponent Saturday night.

Stevenson didn’t make any promises to them during a promotional appearance at a Newark recreation center, but the undefeated featherweight contender intends to deliver what those kids from his hometown want. The 22-year-old Stevenson (11-0, 6 KOs) is scheduled to meet Mexican veteran Alberto Guevara (27-4, 12 KOs) in a 10-round main event ESPN will televise Saturday night from Prudential Center, a short drive from the Newark neighborhood where Stevenson grew up.

“They wanna see me knock somebody out,” Stevenson told BS.com. “I’m gonna try my best to give it to them. I don’t wanna put no more pressure on myself, but that was really the main thing they said.”

Scoring a knockout essentially was all Stevenson didn’t do in his last fight, an impressive, 10-round, unanimous-decision victory over Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz (24-2, 16 KOs) on April 20 at Madison Square Garden.

“That was definitely the only thing that didn’t satisfy me about that fight,” Stevenson said. “A knockout Saturday would mean a lot to me.”

The 2016 Olympic silver medalist won his previous two bouts by knockout, but against lesser opposition than Diaz, a former world championship challenger at 130 pounds.

The 28-year-old Guevara, of El Cajon, California, has been knocked out only once since he turned pro in November 2009. Japan’s Shinsuke Yamanaka (27-2-2, 19 KOs) knocked out Guevara in the ninth round of their November 2013 fight for Yamanaka’s WBC bantamweight title.

“I ain’t gonna lie – I don’t know too much about him,” Stevenson said of Guevara. “I didn’t watch too much tape of him. I kind of got frustrated watching seven different people in camp, so I didn’t really get to watch too much of him. But the fights that I did watch, I wasn’t really impressed.”
