RIP Pernell 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker (1964 - 2019)

I remember reading about his two fights with Mcgirt in a ring magazine write up.

A truly great fighter.

Can only imagine how many titles hed have racked up in this era.

Whitaker is the guy who wisely said in the 90s "It's not about championships anymore. It's about proving who's the best pound for pound."

Whitaker saw that the proliferation of belts made them rather meaningless and instead began concentrating on showing that he was the best in the world at any weight.

On the other hand, is slipping punches enough to win a round?

It's what you do in return on the offensive end that detetmines who won that round.

I would never judge who won that round based on a 15 second segment.

Oscar did a lot of good work in that fight. Whitaker was his usual brilliant defensive self, but his offense that night was primarily a jab.

I didn't mean to suggest that you could judge the round off of that clip. I agree that a defensive fighter, fun to watch or not, also has to accomplish enough offense to deserve to win a round. And I haven't watched that fight recently enough to comment specifically. My recollection is that it was a questionable win for Oscar, but not outrageously so.
