Luis Nery vs Juan Carlos Payano

Post by diddy »

Nery is an outrageous -4000 favorite in this one. Payano is no scrub. Nery seems to be real deal tho. Thoughts on this fight?

Today’s Manny Pacquiao-Keith Thurman undercard weigh-in featured two potential points of drama. One, the notoriously scale-averse Omar Figueroa, made weight without issue. The other, former WBC bantamweight champ Luis Nery, did not. “Panterita” missed the bantamweight limit by half a pound and now has one hour to cut the remaining weight.

Nery (29-0, 23 KO) famously weighed in above the super bantamweight limit for his planned bantamweight title defense against Shinsuke Yamanaka, leading the sanctioning body to strip him of the belt and Japan to suspend him indefinitely. There’s no title on the line this time, but there is a title shot, as whoever wins between him and Juan Carlos Payano (21-2, 9 KO) will challenge the winner of Nordine Oubaali-Takuma Inoue for the WBC belt.

UPDATE

Nery eventually made 118

Why doesn’t he just move up to 122....better fights (other than Inoue) there anyway.

Nery's a beast. He blows Payano away.

Let's move on to the best fight that can be offered: Nery vs Monster Inoue.

The world will be watching this true super fight.

The odds are reasonable. Payano is years past his prime and was not elite even in his prime. He is there to lose.

I would love to see Payano box PEDery’s ears off. Not likely.

The odds on this were as awful as I thought. Very even fight thru 6. Payano probably ahead. Nery is vastly overrated.

Once Nery found the range, he dismantled Payano. Such heavy hands.

Bring on the Monster.

Nery vs. Inoue is one of the best fights that can be made in the sport right now.

So it'll probably never happen.

I didn't make a prediction.

I just want Nery in with the Monster.

Nery can't fight Inoue. Naoya will crush him in 3 rounds

Nery has more winnable fights out there for him than being embarrassed in a few rounds by Noaya. Takuma is the only member of tbe Inoue clan he has a chance against, and even that's not a given.

He should refocus and look at Tete, Casimero or Oubaali

nery wasnt impressive. hes obviously a powerful guy who can put his shots together to the head and body, but it seemed it wasnt just that he was taking it easy early, but that he was genuinely a bit uncomfortabble with payanos boxing. he pretty much admitted as much

inoue is a bigger puncher, faster, and a tighter puncher then nery. on the last point, nerys wide shots have led to him taking some counter shots knockdowns as he get caught between swings. it was lennox or porter who rightfully pointed out that nery put himself in danger of getting caught

nery would need some serious toughness and have to be able to withstand a lot of punishment to come back and get inoue. he might have it, but i think thats defo a matchup favoring ino

Anyone else Inoue fights (including Donaire) will just lose worse. Nery/Inoue is clearly THE fight to make in the division and as fans we should all be hoping it can happen.
