calzaghe v Johnson at 168?

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Just read the times, and they are claiming the fight will be at 168! Can Johnson make 168 in 5 weeks, I know he isn't a huge Light Heavy, but this is a strange fight. Surely the whole point of fighting Johnson was to make a name at Light Heavyweight?

Of course, Calazaghe wouldn't get a belt if he beat Johnson at 175 except maybe the IBO one, does he still have that?

Thought that was what Tarver and Hopkins were fighting for??

5 weeks notice and shed all that weight, that would be like a kamakaze [spl] mission for Johnson!! :o

According to his boxrec record he was 172 for his last fight so its quite possible he could make 168. I'm sure he'd give it a go for a few extra quid!

Hope he gets well paid for this fight and Glen isn't dead at the weight.

seems like that's what all the delay's about. johnson wants paying up front. maybe the only way that happens is if he comes in at 168. maybe the fight is worth much more for two titles.

i've been reading around, and most writers are saying it looks like they're trying to put together a catchweight. if it's a catchweight at 172, and johnson was 172 in his last fight, calzaghe better be careful! that is if some nasty surprise is going to be sprung on the fans, i.e. a 2nd rate opponent instead

yer boxing news mentioned the catchweight thing. Just this thread mentioning it being at 168lbs is a bit worrying.

Johnson is not a big Light Heavyweight I'm sure he could boil down to 168 without struggling too much. Money talks!

fightnews have also said 168, but hey they might have got it off here. also, yes the times said it also.

four pounds isn't so much. johnson is dangerous, however. look at when he went to germany, very close to beating ottke, spanked ulrich. he's fought well over here too, with the woods fights & the owoh KO

Johnson can make 168 no problem, Ive met him and was struck by how small he actually was.

Remember he ws at 160 not long ago.

He also wasn't 175 yet, and wasn't 41 years old...you body starts to slow along with your metalbolism and ability to lose weight with no effect. Will it be an issue...if it's catchweight, no, it shouldn't be. However, making him drop 7 pounds may. I just think Calzaghe comes off as an ass for calling out all of LHW pretty much, yet asking all of them to hit 168.

That whole Briggs thing was a fuckin farce.

Calling out LHW's and making them fight at 168...That's fornicating hillarious!

Calzaghe is a genius!

Seriously though, doubt the weight will be an issue with Glen, it could be an advantage however (Glen could be +10lbs heavier on fightnight)

I think he should call out Valuev at catchweight - 172.

It has to be at 168 for the title to be at stake. Lets face it Calzaghe is the true champ at 168, and ITV will want the title on the line.

Great fight if they can get it on terrestrial.

The only reason I see Johnson turning down Calzaghe in favour of Woods is that Glen sees himself with more chance of beating Woods.

Woods should have taken the £400k on offer by Warren. He wont earn that kind of dough fighting anyone else.

Calzaghe is getting more and more like Roy Bloody Jones! he's trying to do to Johnson what his Royness did to an ageing Virgil Hill, drop too many pounds.

perhaps he will call Woods to come down to 168 and fight for Woods title, SRL-Lalonde style

I am pretty sure that johnson doesnt drain himself to make 172, he pretty much steps on the scales at 172 ish and fights the next day at only a few pounds more. He, as it has already been said isnt a big light heavy, and im sure he can drain down to 168 healthly and remain strong.

5 weeks however isnt long but, glenn is used to this kind of thing.
good fight, werent people getting excited about the prospect of adamek johnson at light heavy? So its not like its a stiff joe will be facing.

Actually Valuev is also a rather small heavyweight and I'm sure in 3 weeks he could get himself down to a catchwight of 172. Lame excuses really if he wouldn't take the fight.

i think one of thre things they're trying to do is make him feel like the 'journeyman' he was. treat him like shit, make him fight on their terms. which i guess is fine for SN IF they can actually make the fight.

very disrespectful though, and they were the same with Briggs, no way he melts down to 168 that's ridiculous
