Bazinyan is a good prospect, but he has a fight this week, What about Peter Quillen He is a Name, has a good record, and he is still in shape as his last fight ended in the 2nd round with his opponent being cut/unable to continue due to an accidental head butt.

• Kell Brook is not on the show (he's targetting a bout with Terence Crawford in the summer)
• Joshua Buatsi vs. TBA (he's probably facing a journeyman from the US due to the short-notice or he may even be pulled from the event)

I agree though, Eddie Hearn keeps boasting to the media about the so-called “stacked card”, which admittedly includes many names that are popular in the UK, but we don’t know who some of their opponents are and there’s hardly any media coverage discussing the undercard fights that have already been confirmed.

I guess Matchroom is confident about the Joshua-Ruiz Jr. fight being big enough on its own to sell the event to fans, since Hearn has made very little effort to publicise the bouts appearing on the undercard. Madison Square Garden will be sold-out though.

Maybe, but i still find his last fights impressive and he deserve a title shot because of that. Besides, i doubt Smith can get into ring someone more serious than Ryder this year.

Lemieux would be a good pick imo. This could generate interest in a Saunders, Canelo and Golovkin future fight plus generate interest for Smith alone due to Lemieux being somewhat familiar with fans. Imo Smith would spectacularly splatter Lemieux which would build the Smith hype.

Eddie Hearn claims that Callum Smith’s next fight will likely take place in September in the US. However, due to the short-notice period, I don’t expect the Brit to face any marquee names and the list of available fighters (as in, not tied to rival networks or not already having fights lined-up) within WBA’s top-15 rankings is rather limited in nature. He’ll probably appear on the undercard of an event headlined by Demetrius Andrade on September 14th.

Eddie Hearn was unwilling to discuss Smith’s refusal to accept a seven-digit offer to face Billy Joe Saunders, but the Matchroom boss did state that Callum wants to face Canelo as soon as possible, with a future bout against Daniel Jacobs being a distinct possibility (after the American has competed in one or two bouts at 168lbs to acclimatise himself to his new weight division).

It appears that Callum Smith is going to play it safe for his next couple of bouts against low-risk mediocre opposition, whilst patiently waiting for the Canelo mega-payday to materialise.

SMW is dire at the moment - really boring division. It shouldn't be there's a few unbeaten champs but nobody seems to be going anywhere near each other. You sense how bad it is by the number of career middleweights venturing north. Plant looks pretty good. Smith I'm not even convinced he's that good- massive for the weight and well schooled but he looked god awful against skogland, done a number on Groves but not sure how much Groves had left tbh.

Unless he got matched against Plant or Ramirez (moving up anyway?), he's better off trying his luck at LHW.

Don't hold out much hope for his net fight- hasn't exactly struck whilst the iron was hot after his wbss win.

If you take a look at the top-ten rated 168lb-ers (as per ESPN & The RING), the likes of Benavidez, Plant, Dirrell, Eubank Jr., Uzcategui and Truax are all Al Haymon fighters with ties to rival networks.

The same applies to Ramirez (with the ESPN/Top Rank fighter making the jump to 175lbs) and Saunders (with Callum Smith refusing a seven-digit offer to face Billy Joe, who has ties with Queensberry/BT/ESPN).

And with Canelo having bigger fish to fry, then there aren’t any other DAZN fighters rated amongst the top-ten at 168lbs.

This leaves Callum Smith capable of potentially facing fellow DAZN stablemates who are fringe contenders, such as Lemieux, Ryder or Fielding.

Alternatively, he’ll be matched against a free agent, who’ll likely be an anonymous fighter (perhaps someone like Avni Yildirim, who may have some sort of informal ties with the PBC, since he regularly faces Haymon’s guys).

I’m not saying that Matchroom won’t consider matching Smith with Haymon’s guys, but they’re usually considered as the last resort.

And with the lure of a potential Canelo mega-payday very likely to become a reality sometime during the second half of 2020, the Brit will be protected and matched against relatively easy opposition during the interim.
