I think that most fighters just dont think about the risk and potential consequencsoogiebe wrote: ↑23 Jul 2019, 16:22I've seen a lot of discussion here on the topic, but this was the first time I actually thought about how that impacts the brain. Can't understand how anyone would take such a risk or why it's tolerated. Money, money, money. Terrible.Deleted_Scenes wrote: ↑23 Jul 2019, 16:11
No, you were pretty close. I don't know how much weight Dadashev cut, or how quickly, but with what's known these days, it's criminal more isn't being done to protect the fighters from themselves. Modern weight cutting techniques are literally killing people.

Re: Maxim Dadashev has Died
Yeah that's true too. Potential consequences are very severe, sometimes fatal, but the risk, the probability, is low. This is why most of fighters don't think about that or think that, like you said, they wont be the one.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑23 Jul 2019, 17:53agree, and its just to easy for ppl to tell themselves that they wont be the onedagilechia wrote: ↑23 Jul 2019, 17:52

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding the brain is not water, so none of this is lost. What happens instead, is the loss of water from within the brain causes it to shrink slightly. The extra space around the brain is occupied by an increase in the volume of CSF.
Cutting too much weight, too quickly, or failing to properly rehydrate, means that when a blow to the head occurs, the brain has more distance to travel before impacting the side of the skull. That means more speed, and more force, increasing the likelihood of brain injury.
The best way to protect against this, is to restrict rapid weight cutting, by forcing a fighter to be within 10% of his fighting weight 30 days out, and within 5% 15 days out, or to ban dehydration altogether. The latter is easy to do. All that's required, is a simple urine test immediately before weighing in. Inadequate hydration level = no permission to fight.
This whole practice is why I'm always quick to speak out against rehydration clauses. A weight disadvantage in ring is still far less of a health risk, than having a drained fighter taking punches to the head.

I don't like the dehydration-rehydration business either, but it happens to heavyweights too, like Mago. Ali too. Brain damage has long been a part of this questionable sport of ours, hence the flippant phrase "punch drunk".

Rest in peace, brave ring warrior.
This is just another example of why boxing is such a brutal sport and why people shouldn't take boxing lightly. So many fighters put their lives on the line every time they step in the ring.

So sad. It’s just a matter of time before this happens in a PPV type fight and it will either kill this sport forever or lead to higher health regulations to protect these gladiators.
Boxing has operated under its own umbrella for way too long making its own rules and doing the bare minimum in regards to safety to be most profitable. The times are going to change.

Bad day.
What can I say that hasn't been said already.

Dadashev’s widow, Elizaveta Apushkina, arrived in Maryland late Monday night. She was in the process Wednesday of having her husband’s body transported back to Russia.
Her husband’s purse – $75,000, plus training expenses – will be paid to her. Insurance companies don’t underwrite life insurance policies for professional boxers due to the inherent danger of their occupation.
Bob Arum, whose company promoted Dadashev, will pay for the fallen fighter’s funeral expenses.

Here's a related fact: boxers run the risk of getting killed or turned into vegetables every time they step through the ropes to face a live opponent. This automatically clears them of any suspicion of being pussies or cowards. So keyboard warriors should never call them pussies or cowards. Especially on a boxing forum whose members allegedly respect boxers.caldo2025 wrote: ↑23 Jul 2019, 21:28 So sad. Well no one twisted their arms to box pal and I have news for you, just because you put gloves on to make a living it doesn’t mean that you can never be called a coward. There are plenty of cowards boxing for living who have 17 kids with 19 mothers. Let’s see if he can do the math and get that joke Boxing Fans. Longshot I’m sure. If it weren’t for Manny, JMM would be sucking D for beer money in a Mexican halfway house. A lucky ass punch is no way to end it especially with steroid connections that are beyond glaring.Lackeos wrote: ↑27 Jul 2019, 14:45Here's a related fact: boxers run the risk of getting killed or turned into vegetables every time they step through the ropes to face a live opponent.
