Oscar Valdez vs. Shakur Stevenson - Purse Bid: August 2, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

The World Boxing Organization has ordered Oscar Valdez to make a mandatory defense of his featherweight world title against undefeated mandatory challenger Shakur Stevenson.

The WBO has sent down a purse bid, taking place at 9:00 a.m. (EST) on Friday, August 2nd, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista South, Kissimmee, Florida.

The minimum acceptable bid will be $150,000.00 (One-Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars). WBO President Francisco Valcárcel, Esq. will handle the purse bid proceedings.

Both boxers are promoted by Top Rank. Valdez is managed by Frank Espinoza, while Stevenson is handled by the trio of Andre Ward, James Prince and Josh Dubin.

If the fight goes to a purse bid, Valdez will receive 75% of the purse and Stevenson shall receive the remaining 25%.

Valdez (26-0, 20 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Jason Sanchez in June.

Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs) beat down and stopped Alberto Guevara earlier this month.

Valdez has been struggling to make the featherweight limit of 126-pounds for some time. The boxer's management have stated several times that he's struggling to make the weight - but he's willing to do so to secure fights with Josh Warrington or Carl Frampton. There is very little enthusiasm about taking part in a fight with Stevenson, so it won't be surprising to see Valdez move up.

Funny. I've never seen a purse bid between 2 boxers who share the same promoter.

Has Bob even tried to make the fight?

Of course, anyone can put a bid in.

Won't be surprised if Valdez vacates. Wonder how the weight cut is.

Valdez's WBO reign has been like Zurdo's WBO reign. At least Valdez has had more competitive fights though,

Valdez has seemed a little shaky since the Quigg bout.

Despite the deserved win, he was physically pounded and had his jaw broken. It seems to have affected him.

He's attempted to box more instead of slug since Quigg. I don't think that it suits Valdez. He's a no holds barred bomber. He needs to live or die with that style. It brought him a championship.

If he tried to get stylistic with Stevenson, Valdez would lose badly.

Stevenson will easily outbox him. He’s too fast and too hard to hit.

valdezs hand speed is pretty good, despite him being a bit wild and crude at times. i wouldnt say stevenson is too fast, but likely a much better boxer. still, shaks fought no one basically and im not sure he really has any meaningful power at a high level, would be very interesting match to me

You won't see one here. My guess is Bob wants shakur to fight the Chinese guy first.

I have heard the term "purse bid" for a long time but never bothered to figure out what it exactly means...here's the wiki definition...so my question to you guys is this: if it goes to a purse bid, is it an "open bid" where nobody knows the other bids put forth? or like a public auction and the last promoter standing gets it?

wiki definition:
A purse bid is an initial step in arranging a professional boxing match, involving the fight's/card's promoter(s). All interested registered promoters may bid on the amount of the purse (the total money that the fighters will be paid for the match), if the sides representing each fighter fail to agree on it before the deadline. The highest offer wins; however, the winning entity must produce a small percentage of the total amount up-front by a certain date. The purse in a purse bid is split between the fighters according to the preset formulas of the sanctioning commissions.[1][2] Purse bids are often won by one of the two fighters' promoters.

For championship belt fights under a given sanctioning body (WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, etc), the two fighters' (champion and challenger) promoters/managers usually get together to establish an agreement for how much each side will receive. In situations where the two sides can't agree, it will sometimes go to a "purse bid" where the process is opened up to any promoter that would like to put on the fight. They submit bids for how much they're willing to pay in purses and the highest bidder wins the right to put on the fight. In such cases, the champion usually gets a higher percentage and the challenger a lower percentage and the total purse is simply split between the two by formula.

For example, in the summer of 2015 the WBA heavyweight champion was Wladimir Klitschko and the WBA wanted him to fight his mandatory challenger, Tyson Fury. The two sides (K2 Promotions for Klitschko and allegedly for Fury) were initially unable to come to an agreement on terms for a fight. The WBA then ordered a purse bid, which would have allowed any promoter to submit bids to put the fight on themselves. Just before the purse bid was going to open up, the two sides announced they had come to an agreement and so the purse bid was canceled.

Yehh. Even as an Olympian. If you’re this young, no need to jump so far ahead. Gain some pro experience.

As expected.. Valdez will vacate..

With the WBO 126-pound title now vacant, the top two contenders, Shakur Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs) and Joet Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs), will most likely meet for the belt.

Stevenson get's a vacant title shot.

Top Rank Wins Valdez-Stevenson Purse Bid

Top Rank Inc. won a purse bid Friday morning for the WBO featherweight title bout between champion Oscar Valdez and mandatory challenger Shakur Stevenson.

Bob Arum’s company promotes Valdez and Stevenson. It was the lone bidder for the right to promote the 126-pound championship match and won with a bid of $1.5 million.

BS.com has been informed that Valdez-Stevenson, though mandated by the WBO, is not expected to happen. Mexico’s Valdez (26-0, 20 KOs) has indicated to Top Rank that he’ll give up the WBO featherweight title, which would leave Stevenson to fight another contender for that crown.

“We expect Oscar Valdez to move up in weight, as rumored, and see what big fight can be made at 130 [pounds],” Carl Moretti, Top Rank’s vice president of boxing operations, told BS.com. “We plan on offering Oscar a fight against Miguel Berchelt.”

Top Rank co-promotes Mexico’s Berchelt (36-1, 32 KOs), who holds the WBC super featherweight title.

Stevenson, meanwhile, would like to fight former featherweight and super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton for the unclaimed championship once Valdez vacates it. According to the WBO’s rules, Top Rank must offer a fight against the No. 1-ranked Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs) to the WBO’s next available contender.

Joet Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs), of Glendora, California, is No. 2 in the WBO’s featherweight ratings. Las Vegas’ Jessie Magdaleno (26-1, 18 KOs) is ranked No. 3, one spot ahead of the fourth-rated Frampton.

Gonzalez is represented by Golden Boy Promotions. Top Rank is Magdaleno’s promoter and Frampton’s co-promoter.

“There are a couple different scenarios that could play out,” Moretti said. “That could take a couple weeks to sort out.”

Whomever he fights, Top Rank intends to bring Stevenson’s first title fight to his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, either in October or November. Stevenson’s last fight was held at Prudential Center in downtown Newark, where the 2016 Olympic silver medalist knocked out Alberto Guevara (27-5, 12 KOs) in the third round July 13.

The heavily favored Frampton (26-2, 15 KOs) would have to win his August 10 fight in Philadelphia to remain in contention for this fight versus Stevenson. Northern Ireland’s Frampton is scheduled to meet Mexico’s Emmanuel Dominguez (26-8-2, 18 KOs) that night in a 12-round main event ESPN+ will stream from Temple University’s Liacouras Center.
