The two-time Olympic Gold medalist and three-division titlist, Vasyl Lomachenko will travel abroad for a three-belt lightweight title fight showdown versus England’s Luke Campbell. As revealed weeks ago, the event will take place August 31 at the O2 Arena in London, England, as confirmed by Lomachenko’s promoter Top Rank, whose output deal with ESPN will allow the event to be streamed live on ESPN+ in the United States.

“Vasiliy Lomachenko is a unique talent who is going to take the United Kingdom by storm,” Bob Arum, Lomachenko’s Hall of Fame promoter stated of the reigning unified lightweight titlist. “Luke Campbell is an excellent fighter, but Lomachenko is in a class of his own. The fans on that side of the pond have wanted Lomachenko to return ever since he turned pro.

“It’s going to be a crazy, sold-out crowd at the O2 Arena, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Lomachenko has the crowd’s support.”

“This is a fight for history because my goal is to unify all of the belts in the lightweight division,” said Lomachenko, who willingly conceded home nation advantage to his opponent out of sheer desire to fight in the UK.

“Luke Campbell is the next challenge for me on that journey. He is an excellent fighter who I remember well from the 2012 Olympics.

“He has a difficult style, and I cannot afford to overlook him.”

The destination came about after Lomachenko experienced the wild atmosphere provided for longtime friend and stablemate Oleksandr Usyk’s 8th round knockout of Tony Bellew in his final cruiserweight championship defense last November in Manchester, England.

“It is very special for me to fight in London,” noted Lomachenko, who scored a 4th round stoppage of Anthony Crolla in his most recent title defense this past April. “I visited last year, and the response from the people was overwhelming. They respect my fighting style and are passionate about boxing. I can’t wait to put on a great show for everyone.”

“I am thrilled to see Vasiliy Lomachenko head to the UK to meet British star Luke Campbell," said Eddie Hearn, Campbell’s promoter who will announce UK TV rights during a press conference to be held Monday in London.

“Loma is simply one of the finest boxers to ever lace them up, the best fighter on the planet today and I’m honored to be promoting his first ever pro fight in the UK.

“But Luke is an elite world fighter, too with his range, ability and heart, the Hull ace can shock the world and rip Loma’s titles from him on another epic night of boxing in the capital.”

Now it’s just up to the boxer himself to make his promoter’s words come to life.

“The best fighting the best, this is going to make one hell of a fight,” noted Campbell (20-2, 13KOs), who makes his second attempt at a lightweight title in the pro ranks. “I am in this sport to be the best and I am this sport to become a world champion. This is what I train and work so hard for, to become a world champion and fulfill my potential.”

Campbell expected to face either of the next two-highest rated contenders, unbeaten lightweights Zaur Abdullaev and Devin Haney who will instead face each other in a title eliminator this September.

Instead, he takes on the man regarded by many as the very best in the sport today.

“He is ranked number one pound-for-pound on the planet so for me to fight a guy like that only encourages me more to be the best that I can be,” insists Campbell. “t is exactly the level that I want to be at. I’m well aware of how good he is and what he is capable of doing but I’m also well aware of what I can do and what I’m going to do.

“I think that I can knock out anyone that I hit right, I believe that I am one of the biggest punchers in the lightweight division. This is going to be the toughest fight of my life and I’m preparing for it, physically and mentally. This is Luke Campbell’s year, it’s my time.”

Nobody at 135 is going to trouble Loma except maybe for Mikey Garcia, and that fight ain't happening.

Getting Lomachenko over to the UK, you lucky so and so's.
I saw him fight in Vegas and he's as good was rumoured.
Luke Campbell is a solid boxer and a worthy opponent, but he's going to have to produce a career defining performance to get by this guy.

Luke Campbell will be pound-for-pound No 1 with win, says Eddie Hearn

"He is the best of the best right now," Hearn said to Sky Sports about the Ukrainian great.

"We talk about the fighters that we've brought to the UK for major fights - Terrence Crawford, Errol Spence, Gennady Golovkin, [Oleksandr] Usyk as well, [Jorge] Linares, all great fighters.

"All those great fighters have been arguably pound-for-pound No 1 at the time. I think this guy is pound-for-pound No 1 and most people acknowledge that, so it's great.

"It's great for British boxing, it's great for fight fans but he's here so Luke Campbell can beat him. That's why we brought him here, if Luke just cared about the money in this fight, the fight would have taken place in America.

"We feel as a team that Luke Campbell has a good chance to beat him on home soil. We know it's going to be difficult, we know Lomachenko is a genius, but they're both very, very good technical fighters.

"They've grown up together around the amateur code since 2003, the European Championships, obviously both won gold in London [2012] as well, so we know the task ahead, but Luke Campbell is in the shape of his career right now, he's in the prime of his career to try and take advantage of this opportunity.

"Luke Campbell is not just fighting for WBC, WBA, WBO, Ring Magazine world titles, he's fighting for the pound-for-pound No 1 position. If you're going to gamble, gamble big.

"He's not expected to necessarily beat Lomachenko. I think everyone is giving him a good shot and saying 'I think he'll give a good account of himself' but there's not many that deep down truly believe he can win.

"We do as a team, but is that because we're a team? I don't know but when you look at the attributes of Campbell and the skill of Campbell, you've got to give him a shot in this fight, and the size of Campbell, and the way he's punching with Shane McGuigan, but as we saw against Anthony Crolla, Lomachenko is on a whole another level."

Hearn: Campbell Fight Toughest Of Lomachenko's Career So Far

Eddie Hearn still feels Luke Campbell will give Lomachenko the most difficult fight of his career next month in London. Hearn expressed that belief to Lomachenko during a press conference Monday in London to officially announce their August 31 bout at O2 Arena.

“You know boxing,” Hearn, Campbell’s promoter, told Lomachenko. “Of course, your father knows boxing. You recognize the test and the challenge of Luke Campbell in this fight. You’ve took part in many tournaments together. I see this as the toughest fight of your career so far – but a big challenge for you, in London, against a British fighter.”

The 31-year-old Lomachenko acknowledged Hearn’s take on how formidable of a challenger Campbell, also 31, will be next month.

“Maybe, because he is tall,” Lomachenko said. “He has a big reach [advantage] and he is a smart boxer. That’s why. And, of course, he has a high boxing IQ. Because he has a very big amateur experience. Maybe it will be, for me, a big challenge.”

Joe Cordina will defend his British and Commonwealth Lightweight titles against Gavin Gwynne in a mouth-watering battle of Wales on the undercard of Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Luke Campbell at The O2 in London on August 31, shown live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK.

At the top of the bill, Olympic Champions Vasiliy Lomachenko (13-1, 10 KOs) and Luke Campbell (20-2, 16 KOs) will clash for the WBC, WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight World titles, Manchester Heavyweight Hughie Fury (23-2, 13 KOs) takes on former WBA World Champion Alexander Povetkin (34-2, 24 KOs) and WBC Flyweight ruler Charlie Edwards (15-1, 6 KOs) makes the second defence of his crown against Mandatory Challenger Julio Cesar Martinez (14-1, 11 KOs), with more exciting additions to be announced soon.

It's either that or the fact that he looks bigger than Loma, because Loma started his career at featherweight..

Loma is very small for 135. He could probably still make 126 without that much trouble.

Loma will demonstrate to the world how to technically take apart a skilled, much taller fighter.

Not me. I voted for Luke. Can't say if it's because I'm a big fan, or if I truely think he can do it. Loma ain't invincible. Linares showed he can be hurt. Salido showed he can be roughed up. Luke could show he can be out boxed at distance if he has the fight of his career and doesn't take his foot off the gas for a second.
