I'm research Seaman Joe Hunt history due to his military career. He was born in Kent, England, full name Percy Reginald Gordon Hunt. Joined the Royal Navy and served in WWI, it appears he obtained the rank of Commander. He settled in South Africa. The aspects I'm not able to currently establish is his connection to the Royal Navy while in South Africa and why he joined the South African army to fight in north Africa during WWII. He was captured at Tobruk. Of interest to boxing fans - there is a story that he escaped a number of times by knocking out his guards, but I don't have evidence / details. I do have documentation that shows he managed to get as far as Northern Italy before being betrayed to the Gestapo by an informant.
