Re: Any boxer caught
Certainly something more concrete and 'threatening' must be done. All sports are facing a similar dilemma with PED's, however in contact sports there is more risk of getting seriously hurt, which one would think would garner more serious attention.
Re: Any boxer caught
Well if Whyte has taken something, there could be a strong argument for a lifetime band as he is older, not stupid, discusssed this before, has experience of being caught and served a ban so plenty of time to think about this subject more than most.

Re: Any boxer caught
At the very least they should match athletics sanctions
Some guy called Luke Traynor is facing 4 year ban for taking cocaine. I think it way too harsh personally but 4 years for PEDs would send a message

We do need some universal sanctions

Re: Any boxer caught
too many ppl with money and power would suffer as a result of this though, including the sanctioning bodies etc
i think automatic life bans may be a bit too blanket for me,, but defo it should be that the consquences are more painful to the boxer then they currently are a lot of the time.

Re: Any boxer caught
The governing bodies need to step up and intervene appropriately before the real National governments step up and ban professional boxing
Re: Any boxer caught
I say allow it for everybody or disallow it so severely that nobody attempts it anymore. In between don't work.
Either everybody is allowed to do it. Or it's no less than a 5 year ban for the 1st offense, and Lifetime ban for a 2nd offense. The sh*t would stop then.

Re: Any boxer caught
It's getting beyond a joke. I think its too easy for them to try to hide behind 'I didn't realise', eg Whyte's first go, BJS, etc.
One to three years for a first offence, up to a lifetime ban for a second one, and a full lifetime ban for a third.
And a lifetime ban should include being banned from holding any license, manager, trainer, etc.
If Whyte is banned he will still be getting money from his holding a managers license. In the event of a non-permanent ban it would IMO be silly to remove that license, but in the event of any lifetime ban I think it should be any license.
If you take the view that any banned substance is equally bad, then people would rather be hung for a sheep than a lamb.
But it has to be unable to be worked around by re-licensing somewhere else. And it will work best if there is an international consensus.
It might be that 'richer' organisations such as the WBC etc will have to subsidise smaller national organisations if we want to see drug testing rolled out to all levels of the sport. Probably a step too far that.

Re: Any boxer caught
The problem is policing a ban given the proliferation of governing bodies and sanctioning organisations. Boxing needs to function more like athletics where any ban is enforceable worldwide.
In terms of sanctions, for anything PED related and not a social drug I advocate a four year ban for the first offence and a lifetime ban for the second. Social drugs should be a year, because although they are not generally performance enhancing athletes are supposed to set an example so I view one year as fair.
There will have to be a case by case basis for banned substances accidentally ingested through over the counter products but the sanction would be lower...

Re: Any boxer caught
If all of the biggest commissions in the World ban you, and you're forced to try to get a License to Box in South America or whatever I can't imagine you'd be making anywhere near the same money as you would be if you continued to ply your trade in the places where there's bigger audiences, and bigger matchups so even if a guy was able to continue in smaller locales, it would still be an enormous detriment to his career and earnings.@matt___s wrote: ↑25 Jul 2019, 14:40 It's getting beyond a joke. Re: Any boxer caught
In boxing, 5 years pretty much is a lifetime ban.
Mansour came back after a long "time out " but he was a heavy, 5 years is a lifetime for the littler guys.

Re: Any boxer caught
That's exactly the point. The penalty should be so severe that nobody wants to risk it. If 5 years away will ruin your career, then I guess you better think hard about taking that sh*t huh?
Re: Any boxer caught
The punishments should probably be harsher. But I think the most important thing is getting the testing better so people actually get caught. I'll use an extreme example to illustrate.
Like imagine we made the punishment for speeding on the motor way the death penalty. Do you think anyone would speed?
But what if it was only a 1 in 50,000 chance of being caught in a year if you speed? Well that's lower than your risk of dying in a car accident anyway, so plenty probably would.
Boxing is inherantly going to have people willing to take chances, and in some way it'll make the field less level, since a guy like Canelo or Joshua could get the best teams to beat the testing, and get the best lawyers etc. to avoid the punishment if they do get caught.

fury
miller
whyte
ortiz

i mean, if we keep these guys in rankings without factoring in the ped use, thats literally half the top 10 whove been caught. then we also have guys getting caught around the time they were in bigger fights
stiverne (caught for world title fight)
brown (caught for world title fight)
teper
thompson
wach (caught for world title fight)
wawrzyk (caught for world title fight)

Re: Any boxer caught
The issue is, everyone is on them. Is it cheating, when everyone is cheating? You could argue that, with so much money at stake, Whyte would be a fool not to be on PEDs, given that all his opposition will be.

Personally, I think every win on their record should be changed to a DQ loss or a NC.
That might stamp it out when they go from 26-1 to 0-27 overnight.

Re: Any boxer caught
This. I'm quoting myself, but: "I think almost everyone is sitting there with a copy of the banned list in one hand & a vial of Godzilla's spunk in the other, & while they're shooting Godzilla's unborn babies into the corner of their eyeball they're getting ready to cry: "It was an accident! Look, I've got a receipt for [checks list for the corresponding metabolite they've been hooked for] an energy drink you can only buy in Somalia, must've been that, Guv...""
Fast Eddie's & Whyte's comments in that pre-press conference video don't really change my mind on this...

Or do a stadium fight over here licensed by Luxembourg, or Malta.gilgamesh wrote: ↑25 Jul 2019, 15:08If all of the biggest commissions in the World ban you, and you're forced to try to get a License to Box in South America or whatever I can't imagine you'd be making anywhere near the same money as you would be if you continued to ply your trade in the places where there's bigger audiences, and bigger matchups so even if a guy was able to continue in smaller locales, it would still be an enormous detriment to his career and earnings.@matt___s wrote: ↑25 Jul 2019, 14:40 It's getting beyond a joke. I more meant that if we could get richer organisations to pay into a kitty for smaller ones that we could test people *prior* to world level, not after they’ve been caught.
