I think when you think "Tricky Southpaw"...guys like Pernell Whitaker are the guys managers have nightmares about. Obviously there aren't many Pernell's, but he's the definitive version of a tricky southpaw, and he embodies all the reasons why people have been known to want to avoid those kinda guys.

At heavyweight, Michael Moorer, Chris Byrd and Corrie Sanders used their southpaw stance best.

To my knowledge, no. Nothing that would be considered overly special.

Lew Tendler would be one who's got to be very high up the list. I'd venture to say, certainly in the top 5. Unfortunate to share his prime with Benny Leonard otherwise would be a champion just about any other time. One of the greatest boxers ever out of Philadelphia.
Re: Fighter Who Used Southpaw Stance Best
Frazier always said (think it was in his autobiography too) that he was a Southpaw, obviously he didn't fight out of that stance.
Same as Cotto and DLH?

Re: Fighter Who Used Southpaw Stance Best
I'm sorry to go into the past, and I suspect most readers will be dissinterested .
Back in the 1950's and 1960's there were many around who said that the lightweight Dave Charnley was the best British boxer never to have won a world title although his defeat by world champion Joe Brown in 1961 was hotly disputed.
Charnley fought as a southpaw but was right handed. I interviewed Dave dozens of time when I was writing his biography ( Dartford Destroyer) as well as former sparring mates and opponents ( Sammy McCarthy) and his RIGHT HOOK was devastating. In the days when information and film coverage were difficult to obtain many of Dave's opponents were wary of his left hand leading them to walk onto his right hook.
He stopped Sammy with a right hook to the body. He said he'd never been hit as hard in all his life. Dave said he 'knew' if he caught ANYONE, properly with the right ( including Joe Brown) they'd 'go'. He proved it eventually in his third fight with Brown, although 'Old Bones' was getting to the end by that time.

According to Sammy McCarthy, we've recently done an interview with him.

Re: Fighter Who Used Southpaw Stance Best
Not long ago I watched Mate Parlov W15 John Conteh (1978). I thought Parlov used his southpaw advantage to particularly good effect that night. During some moments, Parlov actually made Conteh look almost foolish, swatting him from unexpected angles using the left-handed position.
Re: Fighter Who Used Southpaw Stance Best
Sweet Pea hands down. His jab alone was uniquely great for a southpaw stance.
