Nicola Adams drops hint she could be defend her Olympic titles in Tokyo

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

I wonder how this medal would look on my mantelpiece 😉 https://t.co/wy3GdaxBFN
— Nicola Adams (@NicolaAdamsOBE) July 26, 2019
----------------------------------------------
Nicola Adams has dropped a hint that she could be prepared to defend her Olympic boxing titles in Tokyo next year after sharing a post relating to the Games on social media.

The 36-year-old, who won gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016, retweeted official footage revealing the 2020 medals and wrote: 'I wonder how this medal would look on my mantelpiece.'

Adams turned professional after winning gold in Rio but has only fought five times and pulled out of a projected world title shot against Arely Mucino at the Royal Albert Hall in March citing injury.

Prior to the Rio Games, the sport's governing body AIBA - which has since been barred from hosting the Tokyo tournament due to corruption concerns - scrapped the rule preventing professionals from competing at the Olympics.

Adams trains in Sheffield and occasionally visits the GB Boxing gym which is based in the city. She remains on good terms with the staff and coaches at GB Boxing and PA understands that whilst nothing formal has taken place, the option of her returning to the Olympic programme remains open.

A spokesperson for GB Boxing said: 'Nicola is a fantastic boxer, with a winning mentality and the ability to deliver her best performances on the biggest occasions.

'She would be an asset to the GB Boxing squad and would have a great chance of qualifying for Tokyo and winning another Olympic medal.'

Current rules of the Amateur Boxing Association of England - under whose jurisdiction Adams would effectively fight - allow boxers to return provided they relinquish their respective licenses and have had six or less professional bouts.

Despite opportunities, Adams has endured a frustrating start to her professional career and would theoretically have plenty of time to switch in time for the Tokyo qualification tournaments which are scheduled to begin next year.

Since Adams' departure, GB have struggled to fill the women's 51kg slot, although Portsmouth's Ebonie Jones reached the quarter-finals of last year's European Championships at the weight.

I agree - she will get better commercial opportunities with another Olympic medal

I wasn’t sure about her age but just googled it and the maximum age for a boxer to compete at an Olympic games was increased from 34 to 40 so she is ok there

she won 2 Golds? Would this make her the first ever 3-time Gold Medal Olympian?

The likes of Redgrave won 5 golds I think

No idea about women’s boxing specifically

For men’s boxing then Teofilo Stevenson immediately springs to mind, but Nicola Adams achievements can in no way be compared to this

Should this happen, there's only one reason for it and that's for Nicola to enhance her commercial opportunities and for Team GB staff to pin their hopes on a promotional whirlwind to keep them in their jobs.

England Boxing are keen to promote the 'opportunities' afforded to amateur boxers - dangling the carrot of an Olympic berth, fame, fortune and whatever else goes with the gig.
The reality is, that despite having had many people in key positions within AIBA, England Boxing and avery other national federation were unable to stop the IOC reducing the men's weight categories from 12 down to 10 and now in Tokyo 2020 from 10 down to 8.

To shoehorn Nicola Adams into a spot that should be taken by one of the existing female podium squad boxers, simply because she fancies it, and has managed to keep under the maximum 6 pro bout rule, would further tarnish the amateur code.

I can't see what more she's likely to get out of another olympic gold, I mean she's already got two, and her pro career hasn't really taken off, I think the big problem here, is there's just not enough strength in depth in the women's sport yet, it's building, but it's got some way to go, there's few high profile bouts in womens boxing.

The lack of real depth for me, was highlighted by just how easily Clarissa shields triumphed against a women with an oustanding pedigree, she just didn't seem to have the stomach for a real fight.

I think they said they’re having trouble finding a boxer in that weight.

Is that 6 bout rule new? At Rio both N’Dam and Ruenruong had more than 6 fights.

I am sure the old rule used to be no more than 5 fights and you could go back amateur - but you couldn’t box as an international for at least 12 months.

They then changed it at the last Olympics having wild cards - even Manny Pac was rumoured to compete at one stage, so fook knows!

Why doesn't Nicola Adams box very much? Three fights in 2017, two fights in 2018, zero in 2019, and she's on about boxing amateur at the 2020 Olympics!

Is she injury prone? Or does she not really have the drive for the pro game? She's certainly made more out of being famous (commercial endorsements, probably a lot of PAs etc) than she has fighting.

Welsh boxer Jamie Way has 10 pro fights, and now fights on the local amateur scene.

I think the move to go professional isn’t always the best move. Unless you got real amateur pedigree and with a big promoter; then you can find yourself just put in as an opponent giving away lots of advantages.

If you just like to box/fight, then amateur can tick all the boxes.

I would imagine Nicola Adams decision is based around the financial side. I very much doubt she is making much money from actual fights. Whereas to be on the Olympic development team at her level pays around £70k a year.

Strangely Katsunari Takayama, former multi time world champion, is trying to compete at the 2020 Olympics, had his next qualifying bout in August. He's like 36 and had to petition the JABF hard for a chance.

He's gone completely amateur, unlike some (Ruenroeng for example) who did both

To me it's akin to finding a loophole allowing you stay competing in the under 16s championship until you are 30. Yes, you might win, but what are you proving?

Amateur boxing is something that you are supposed to do when you are young and then move on from if you have real ability. Everyone knows that it's a limited field with the best in the world elsewhere.

Amateur Boxing has become a means to an end - that end being to sustain jobs for employees at DCMS - Sport England - UK Sport - Team GB - England Boxing, Welsh Boxing, Boxing Scotland etc.,

£15m worth of funding has little to do with creating gold medallists, the investment in which is only of real benefit to the professional managers and promoters who wait in the wings.

GB Boxing’s double Olympic champion, Nicola Adams, shortlisted for National Lottery’s Sporting Legend award

GB BOXING’s two-time Olympic gold medallist, Nicola Adams has been shortlisted for the Sporting Legend award in this year’s National Lottery Awards.

It is a new category that has been specially added to mark the 25th birthday of the National Lottery and aims to celebrate athletes who have made a big impact in that period.

Each athlete was shortlisted by a judging panel based on their achievement and successes both inside and outside the sporting arena.

Adams will compete in a public vote against a range of legendary British sporting icons including Sir Chris Hoy, David Weir CBE, Dame Katherine Grainger, Dame Kelly Holmes, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Sir Mo Farah and Sir Steve Redgrave.

All of the shortlisted athletes can be viewed at https://www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/aw ... ing-legend.

Nicola Adams became the first women in history to win a gold medal for boxing when she won the flyweight category at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Her success sparked a surge in women’s boxing in England as she became one of the best known female athletes in British sport.

She went on to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and in 2016 she became world champion.

Later that year she successfully defended her Olympic crown at the 2016 Games in Rio.

Adams left the GB Boxing programme following her second Olympic gold and is now a professional boxer.

Olympic and Paralympic sport in Great Britain has been transformed by Since National Lottery funding and since it began in 1997, British athletes have won 864 medals.

There's no doubting Nicola's success created a groundswell of interest in women's boxing but the harsh reality is that most are using boxing for fitness and are not competing. Again it's another red herring designed to keep people in their jobs.

Throughout England, Scotland and Wales the total number of competitive female boxers in amateur clubs aged from 10 to 40 years is around 1100.

Considering the efforts of the governing bodies and the media, and the broader acceptance of women's boxing by the general population the small rise in numbers over the past 5 years or so has not been meteoric.

She would for sure be the first women's 3 time boxing gold medallist. A fair few people have won three in one Olympics before, maybe even 5 in swimming, Carl Lewis got 4 in one games, but three in a single sport in successive games is a big deal, and must be a womens boxing first, as there have only been two prior Olympics to feature it.

Off the top of my head Carl Lewis did it in the long jump, also Felix Savon, Usain Bolt too.
Redgrave won his in different events.
I'm sure there are many more too.

Savon, Stevenson and Papp are the only boxers to have won gold in 3 Olympics

Extra bit of trivia Eddie Eagan is the only boxer to have won a gold at the summer and winter Olympics

Harry Mallin, I believe, is the only other 2 time British boxing Olympic champion

Don’t forget that Cubans don’t turn pro and until recently Russian and Eastern European boxers didn’t turn pro either.
