Gamboa looked sharp. When the Cuban boxers were under the system they have in Cuba, they were disciplined. That was the problem for the many who defected to places like Miami where they weren't under the gun of the "system". They could party like crazy. I'm sure it was good for Gamboa to get some discipline back. I'm sure Rogue is much more laid back now that he is no loner under the system himself.ironbeard wrote: ↑27 Jul 2019, 23:44Thanks for the insight. Gamboa looked better than he has in several years. He looked more disciplined than I have ever seen him. Coach Roque definitely has something to do with that.JMac wrote: ↑27 Jul 2019, 23:33
Gambia had his old Cuban amateur coach Pedro Roque in his corner tonight. Roque was the Cuban Olympic coach in Beijing. He later defected to the US and was hired by USA boxing. He’s a great coach but he wanted more money so they let him go. I last saw him working the corner for Azerbaijan in the Rio olympics.
I used to get cigars from him and traded for his Cuban track suit. Good dude.
I was in Rio in '07 for the Pan Am games and at weigh-ins the morning after Gamboa and Rigondeaux first defected, Rogue looked so shaken up knowing he would be in big trouble. He had been the junior national coach and got elevated to senior team national coach when several top boxers defected from a training camp for the Pan Am games. The coaches got fired and now 2 more fighters take off so he was worried he would get the ax. I think some European promoter was behind Rigo and Gamboa taking off. They were in a Rio hotel partying their asses off with hookers, booze, etc when the cops came and turned them over to the Cuban delegation. Somehow when back in Cuba they got another chance to defect and took a boat to Mexico and came into the US that way. What would Trump say about that? lol

Dont know what Trump would say...but at that time Cuban immigrants were treated differently.JMac wrote: ↑28 Jul 2019, 15:19Gamboa looked sharp. Yes Cuban immigrants were treated differently back then with the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy but it was a joke since we know how much Trump likes Hispanic immigrants coming into the US. I should have not said that on this forum as politics goes on the Off Topic forum. my badldlamb wrote: ↑28 Jul 2019, 18:42Dont know what Trump would say...but at that time Cuban immigrants were treated differently.JMac wrote: ↑28 Jul 2019, 15:19

I was thinking about the story I told about Cuban boxers defecting and that Gamboa was with Rigo when they tried to defect from the '07 Pan Am games in Rio. I started to think I got that wrong and I did. It was Erislandy Lara that was with Rigo in Rio. Gamboa was one of the 3 Cubans that defected from a '06 Pan Am games training camp in Venezuela along with Yan Barthelemy and heavyweight Odlanier Solis. When that happened, the coaching staff got fired and Pedro Rogue who had been the junior national team coach got elevated to the senior team. Rogue was in Gamboa's corner Saturday night in Baltimore.
I like to get my facts straight.
Carry on.

Actually it was Obama who ended the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy in one of his last executive orders, right before Trump was inaugurated:JMac wrote: ↑28 Jul 2019, 19:34Yes Cuban immigrants were treated differently back then with the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy but it was a joke since we know how much Trump likes Hispanic immigrants coming into the US. WASHINGTON -- President Obama today revoked the “wet-foot/dry-foot” policy that has provided refuge for Cubans escaping the communist island since the mid-1990s, prompting Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) to accuse the administration of turning its back on people fleeing persecution.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), whose family fled Cuba when she was 7 years old, declared that Obama eliminated the refugee policy, and the Cuban Medical Professional Parole program that encouraged defections of doctors and nurses working abroad, "because that's what the Cuban dictatorship wanted and the White House caved to what Castro wants."

While I dont believe Tevin Farmer is good enough to beat Gervonta Davis I find it strange that Farmer gets criticized for mediocre opposition but Davis seems to get a pass. Because when you get down to it Davis's last 2 world title challengers were no better than the mediocre opposition Farmer has been facing. And Francisco Fonseca was a common opponent for both Farmer AND Davis.

Hugo Ruiz (natural super bantam who jumped to 130# to face Davis) https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/380401
