Gervonta Davis next fight: Who we want vs. Who we'll get

So here are three potential next fights for "Tank"

The natural rival - Tevin Farmer
Davis and rival IBF ruler Tevin Farmer have been exchanging barbs for what feels like forever. Farmer retained his belt at the weekend too, clearly outscoring Guillaume Frenois. The Philadelphian’s slick, defensive style could mesh well with the clinical aggression of Davis. Farmer has made four world title defences, Davis three (one IBF). The sticking point of course is that one champ (Farmer) is with Eddie Hearn and fights on DAZN, while his biggest rival is a PBC fighter.

The one we really want - Miguel Berchelt
The Mexican WBC king is a strong, powerful threshing machine in his prime at 27 (Davis is 24, Farmer 28). Him versus "Tank" could very well be this generation’s Jose Luis Castillo against Floyd Mayweather. Berchelt has made five defences and has not lost since his only setback, in 2014. A combined record of 58-1 (53) is reason enough for this to be desired but, again, there are obstacles. Berchelt is with Top Rank, with whom PBC rarely do business (see Errol Spence vs Terence Crawford).


The one we’ll probably get - Yuriorkis Gamboa
It has long been mooted that Davis would make a defence against Cuba’s former amateur standout and featherweight belt-holder. Gamboa kept that likelihood alive by hammering a faded Roman Martinez on Gervonta’s undercard. He is fast and talented, on a winning run of four in good company, but his defensive frailties have long since been exposed by Terence Crawford and lesser lights. Davis would start a significant favourite over a 37-year-old who has failed to fulfil his potential as a pro.
