The Tragedy of the Hogue Twins

Post by goose 5 »

This is a good read; did anybody here read it? Can you imagine, Shorty beat Archie Moore and Lloyd Marshall seven days apart. He draws with Eddie Booker about a month later and then beats Booker later that same year.

When I was helping out at Moore's ABC Club for boys I heard him say that Shorty Hogue was a very tough guy, that he had a grudge(maybe a racist bent) to beat him. But when Hogue lost to Charley Burley,it took the life out of him. Many thought Hogue would win,but he took a beating. After that he lost 6 out of 8 including a KO loss to Moore at Lane Field. Shorty's bro ,Big Boy, who was scheduled to fight Moore, bumped his leg into a car's bumper in the parking lot the night of the fight and couldn't go on. Shorty was sitting ringside(probably a little drunk)and volunteered to fight Moore. It was Shorty's last fight. What old timers are left in San Diego still talk about the Hogue brothers and their fights with Archie Moore.
