Boxers Who Never Got to Become World Champions Because of Robberies?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

There will be plenty of this list..

Not talking about close fights, unless it was a close but clear.. A win where the majority of boxing public saw 1 winner, who didn't get the nod.

Shall we begin?

Does anyone remember Dave Tiberi?

Image

He's the main reason I started this thread as well.

Fought his heart out against James Toney.. Lost via split decision..
**********************
Notes

- A point was deducted from Tiberi for a low blow in round 6.
- In a fight where many felt that Tiberi dominated, Toney's split decision victory (by scores of 115-111, 115-111 and 111-117) prompted U.S. Senator William Roth of Delaware to call for an investigation of the sport.
- The investigation uncovered the fact that the two judges that awarded the fight to Toney, were not licensed in the state of New Jersey.
- Tiberi chose to retire, even though he was in the prime of his career, rather than fight again.
**********************
Tiberi retired at 25 years old! - It was his first and last world title shot.

Scores
Judge: Frank Garza 115-112 (Toney)
Judge: Bill Lerch 115-112 (Toney)
Judge: Frank Brunette 111-117 (Tiberi)

Second fight was for the MW championship. Most ringsiders had Graham winning, including my dad.

He is absolutely on the money. Who knows what goes on in those mean streets.

Back on topic, I would also add in robberies such as Frankie Duarte against Bernardo Pinango and the first fight between Azumah Nelson and Mario Martinez. In both case it prevented them from becoming world champs.

Andrew Golota X2. Against Byrd, which is a moderate robbery, and against Ruiz, which is a pure f*cking robbery.

That look on Jackie Kallens face during the decision still makes me sick..as if she's telling Toney, "see James, I told ya we'd take care of it."
After all the robberies through the years this one always stands out with me..still bothers me.

Should we include Martin Murray?

At worst he should be a 1 time world champion.

Martinez and Sturm fights.

I had Sturm beating him. Felt Martinez could've gone either way.

He also potentially pitched a 15 round shutout in his hometown and got robbed against a Puerto Rican.

Agreed.
Both close enough to reasonably go ether way.
A close decision not going your way doesn't make it a robbery.
Murray was not the victim of a robbery in either fight.

This wasn't a World Title fight, but Oscar Escandon went on to get at least 2 title shots after his fight with Tyson Cave which was a blatant robbery while Tyson Cave got bubkus.

It's reasonable to believe that had Cave correctly gotten the decision here, he would've gotten those title opportunities.

Jose Armando Santa Cruz against Joel Casamayor...it was an Interim World Title, but he should've won it.

Brutal decision, but that was for the beloved lineal and magazine lightweight titles that Joel somehow won in a Jr welterweight fight
