In the fight following Wilder’s win, journeyman Brian Jones produced an upset when he stopped previously unbeaten Julian Sosa in the fifth round of a welterweight fight scheduled for eight rounds.

Los Angeles’ Jones (15-10, 9 KOs) knocked down Sosa with just under a minute to go in the fourth round. He recorded another knockdown when Sosa’s glove touched the canvas about 30 seconds into the fifth round.

Jones continued to pressure Brooklyn’s Sosa (13-1-1, 5 KOs) and landed several unanswered power shots as Sosa was backed against the ropes. With Sosa still standing, referee Earl Brown stepped in to stop the action at 2:28 of the fifth round.

Deontay Wilder watched from ringside Saturday night and shouted instructions at his younger brother.

Most of the WBC heavyweight champion’s suggestions were ignored, but Marsellos Wilder still scored a unanimous-decision victory over Nicoy Clarke in their four-rounder on the Adam Kownacki-Chris Arreola undercard at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Wilder won their sloppy heavyweight bout by scores of 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37.

The 30-year-old Wilder, of Northport, Alabama, improved to 5-1 (2 KOs, 1 NC). The 38-year-old Clarke, a southpaw from Jersey City, New Jersey, lost a third straight fight and slipped to 2-4.

Wilder was in control until the end of the third round, when Clarke landed a straight left hand that moved Wilder into the ropes. Wilder fired back and landed a chopping right hand to the side of Clarke’s head, but Wilder was tiring by that point of the fight.

Wilder buzzed Clarke with a right hand just before the halfway mark of the fourth round. That shot sent Clarke into the ropes, but Wilder couldn’t finish off his slower, older opponent.

Nevertheless, Wilder won a second fight since journeyman William Deets (8-13, 3 KOs) upset him by fourth-round TKO on January 26 at Barclays Center.

In the bout before Wilder won, Helen Joseph defeated Edna Kiss by unanimous decision in a six-round women’s super-bantamweight bout.

The Nigerian-born Joseph (16-3-2, 10 KOs), of New Haven, Connecticut, recorded a knockdown and won all six rounds by the same score on each of the three judges’ cards (60-53). Hungary’s Kiss (15-11, 9 KOs) has lost six of her past seven fights.

Earlier Saturday, Jamaican junior middleweight Kestna Davis out-maneuvered and out-landed Nicaragua’s Jaime Meza to win a largely uneventful, four-round unanimous decision.

Davis, a southpaw who resides in Vauxhall, New Jersey, improved to 4-0. Meza, of Compton, California, slipped to 0-3.

Brian Howard wasted no time in annihilating Carlos Negron on Saturday night.

The unknown Howard caught the favored Negron cold with a right hand very early in the first round of their scheduled 10-round heavyweight fight at Barclays Center. Howard pounced on Negron, who never recovered from the first right hand that caused him to back into the ropes.

Howard then drilled Negron with a right hand that left Negron on his side, unconscious and under the bottom rope, for several seconds. Puerto Rico’s Negron eventually was able to get to his feet after suffering a first-round knockout defeat and left the ring on his own.

Referee Shada Murdaugh stopped their fight one minute and six seconds into it.

Puerto Rico’s Negron (20-3, 16 KOs) fought for the first time since Dominic Breazeale beat him by ninth-round knockout in what had been a competitive fight December 22 at Barclays Center. Each of his three losses have come by knockout, but Negron was supposed to beat the 39-year-old Howard on the Adam Kownacki-Chris Arreola undercard.

Howard (15-3, 12 KOs), of Loganville, Georgia, had lost two of his previous three fights. He also had been knocked out by an opponent with a 12-19-1 record in December 2012.

Ok...

I wondered if Stevens might be something of a force @ 154, but it appears he's one of those who looks weaker at the lower weight...

Stevens still has a place in boxing.

Strange thing being the right weight....

Stevens showed a better chin taking round after round in a thudding beatdown offa GGG @ MW then gets knocked silly by an average puncher @ 154 ? :maybe:
