Tough fight. Both great boxers and counterpunchers, both quick and accurate, both have good chins. Vernon had a reach advantage, and it could come into play.
I could see both going down, I don't see either getting KO'd, but a TKO for either is possible.
I think De La Heya would have to be aggressive enough throughout the fight to really win on points, so it would depend on which De La Hoya (mentally) showed up.
Passive De La Hoya: Gets outboxed and countered at range all night, there will be good exchanges from both during the fight, but Forrest will win more of them and outwork him with his jab. Forrest UD, KD possible, TKO unlikely.
Balanced De La Hoya: This fight could go either way, Decision or TKO.
Aggressive De La Hoya: Mid/late round TKO for either fighter, or De La Hoya Decision.
That being said, I can't imagine De La Hoya being in an angry/aggressive mood against Forrest, since that usually happened when people got him worked up and Forrest was generally polite and well spoken.
I also don't think De La Hoya would have been on a bicycle like he was against Trinidad or Hopkins. Vernon had good power and enough accuracy to put steel chinned opponents in trouble, but I don't think De La Hoya has a reason to fight concerned until Forrest lands one of those big rights or uppercuts on him.
I think De La Hoya would come in even keel, and it would be a phenomenal counterpunch fest for 7-12 rounds, with either man winning, maybe slightly in Vernon's favor on jab/reach.
