He definitely won the square plate belt.
Perhaps he bought or was awarded this at a later stage.

McCrory would probably have never won a world title had Holyfield not vacated.

Or fought a decent opponent for the vacant title.

You have to admire Glenn for reinvening himself from failing heavyweight to winning cruiserweight and the North East's first ever world champion. True, Patrick Lumumba, the man he beat for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title on a hot night in Stanley in 1989, looked wide-eyed from too many sparring sessions with a peak Mike Tyson (with whom Glenn also sparred) but Glenn jumped on the Kenyan in the first round and hurt him with a big left hook, after which Lumumba went into sparmate mode and sought to survive.
Three years earlier, Glenn had been coldcocked by former British heavyweight champion Hughroy Currie in just two rounds in Oldham. Currie was fired up by the appearance of his friend and new undisputed world welterweight champion Lloyd Honeyghan (who received a 20-minute standing ovation) but it looked really desperate for the loser, who suffered his fourth straight defeat. However, he linked up with Beau Williford in the States for a couple of winning fights, then made the decision to drop to cruiser and went on a fantastic run with wins over Andy Straughn, Chisanda Mutti, Lou Gent and Tee Jay on the way to British and Commonwealth titles and the world rankings. Glenn really earned his IBF title shot, in my opinion, and he took his opportunity with both hands. Good fighter.

His fight with Al "Ice" Cole is often forgotton about..... many people seem to think he just retired after being obliterated and humilated by Lennox Lewis - but he showed his level with a brave effort against on the better cruiserweight champions, again after a return to Heavyweight - who I don't think ever lost his belt in the ring?

Had he known more about making weight he would have been even better - good fighter no doubt and a missed pundit if you ask me.

If I'm remembering his commentary right, Glenn may have been too honest for a network at an all time peak of cheerleading

Glen got drunk and attacked the guy who tried to take his keys! He then got booked for a sportsman’s dinner, turned up blathered, upsetting everyone. To calm the crowd down, they put on pound a pint. Glenn, who had being slung out was knocking on the window asking to be let back in for pound a pint!

Glen was nothing more than a British level Cruiser. He couldn't handle the heavies as Lennox Lewis showed his limitations amongst many other domestic heavies at the time.

Not many boxers get a opponent such as Lumumba for a world title fight by a recognised organisation such as the ibf. Lumumba had only 8 wins and that does not justify being a genuine contender.

If McCrory had fought a decent genuine contender he wouldn't have won the title.

Fair dos to him he won a world title so what more can he do?

As for the tag 'gentleman' I'm not sure that fits him to be honest

It is, but Glen begging for it because he got slung out.
I’ll disagree as well, my 14 year old, at the time, got drunk on a bar a jar. Arrested, the lot. He only got drunk and disorderly.

Ive met Glen a few times, proper nice bloke.
The IBF title at the time was very low rent and he made pennies from boxing. As its already been said his genuine level was British champ, but you can't blame him for taking the opportunities when they arose.
As a commentator he is top class, SKY is poorer without him.
