Vergil Ortiz vs. Antonio Orozco - August 10, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Boxing-Scene.com has been advised that a fight between fast rising prospect Vergil Ortiz (13-0 13 KOs) and once-beaten contender Antonio Orozco (28-1 17 KOs) is being negotiated for August 10th in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The fight would headline a Golden Boy Promotions' card that would be streamed by DAZN.

The 21-year-old Ortiz is being moved very fast and would be taking a step up in class for the second fight in a row. On the Canelo Alvarez-Danny Jacobs undercard in May he stopped former interim champion Mauricio Herrera in 3 rounds. This would be his 3rd fight of the year.

Orozco suffered the only loss of his career last September when he lost to WBC super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez in an exciting fight in the champion's hometown. He bounced back from that fight in March with a unanimous decision victory over Jose Luis Rodriguez.

Ortiz has fought at super lightweight for most of his career but our sources say that if an agreement is reached the fight will be at the welterweight weight limit. Ortiz's fight against Herrera was at the welterweight limit and Orozco has previously missed making the super lightweight so fighting at 147 pounds should benefit both fighters.

VERGIL ORTIZ JR., Welterweight Contender:

“I want to acknowledge a great police officer who passed away in earlier in this month. I want to send my condolences to his family. I want to thank Golden Boy. I want to thank all of my friends for agreeing to be on this card. I want to thank my dad and Robert Garcia for training me hard. I want to thank Hector Beltran as well. I want to thank Hector as well for carrying me on Fortnite. This fight is going to be explosive. I can’t express the magnitude of this event and how awesome it is. It’s going to be great fight. I’m proud and excited to be fighting in Grand Prairie.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Trainer of Vergil Ortiz Jr.:

“Texas is like home to us. We always get nothing but support from all of you guys. I’m very excited to be back with your local hero and future star. He is great kid inside and outside out of the ring. When it comes to boxing in the ring, this kid is something special. He’ll be someone this city will be proud of for many years to come. The future for this kid is unbelievable, and this is the start of it. I’m sure one day he’ll be fighting in the big stadiums in the Dallas area.”

ALEX RINCON, Super Welterweight Prospect:

“I’m really excited to put on a show back home. We all have a lot of fans. We really want to show Golden Boy why Texas is the place when it comes to boxing. Thank you to Golden Boy and DAZN.”

GEORGE RINCON, Super Lightweight Prospect:

“I’m really excited to be on this card with fighters I grew up with. I’m really looking forward to August 10. A big shout out to Lamont Roach Sr., who is my manager, and the NoXcuse Boxing Gym. I’m really excited to showcase my skills on this card.”

TRISTAN KALKREUTH, Light Heavyweight Prospect:

“I want to thank Golden Boy, my team, Ronnie Shields and my manager. I also want to tell kids to stay dedicated to what you are doing. I’m 17 years old, and I’m signed to Golden Boy. I’ve been boxing for 8 years. It’s all about working and dedication.”

ROBERT GASPARRI, Chief Operating Officer of Golden Boy:

“We are happy to be returning to this great state of Texas for yet another exciting night of boxing action. Antonio Orozco could not make it today. But he has promised to ruin Vergil Ortiz’s homecoming party and derail his plans to become world champion.

But I spoke to people out here. They think otherwise. In fact, they have a saying out here.
They say, “Don’t Mess With Texas!” We expect an explosive fight between two of the best and most talented fighters from the Golden Boy stable.”

Ortiz vs. Orozco is a 10-round welterweight fight presented by Golden Boy. The event is sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING,” and Hennessy “Never Stop. Never Settle.” The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 at The Theatre at Grand Prairie in Texas and will be streamed live on DAZN.

The closer the fight gets, the more excited I get about enjoying a fight that should be an all-action slugfest from start to finish!! '

I see Ortiz stopping Orozco around the 5th or 6th round.

I especially like Vergil's statement of support for the police officer he knew who recently died and offering condolences for his family. Cops usually dont get enough support for doing a job that is hard and often thankless.

Ramirez could not put Orozco away. If VOrtiz Jr stops Orozco, it puts the entire division on notice, as well as welter weight.

Everyone is pretty heady about VOrtiz Jr post his Herrera dismantling, including me. But, Mauricio is old and has been through many wars. This fight will tell us much more about Vergil, as well as Orozco.

I am most interested in the VOrtiz defense. If he is as good as I think he is, he will dismantle Orozco and stop him mid to late (if not sooner) and take little overall punishment doing it.

No matter his defense, VOrtiz is likely to get chin checked at some point in a way that Herrera had no chance of doing. Stepping up to fight a boxer of Orozco’s caliber in his 12th fight says an awful lot about the confidence level of Team VOrtiz.

Super light / light welter is the # 1 division in boxing at the moment, imo.

You are right. Orozco withstood some hellacious shots from Ramirez, the same kind that put away Hooker!!

My only regret is that this will be Vergil's 2nd consecutive fight at welter, but his best matchups are against Ramirez, Prograis & Taylor. I'm not sure his punching power would translate as well at welter, with guys like Crawford, Spence, Pac and Porter.

I would really like to see him get a world belt at 140, attempt to unify and THEN move up to 147. Ortiz matches up much better vs Prograis, Ramirez & Taylor than he would against Spence, Crawford, etc. Fights against ANY of those super light champs would be FOY candidates!! :OhYes:

Ramirez gave Orozco a bad bad beating with multiple cuts, knockdowns, loads and loads of punches. Vergil will stop Orozco and Orozco might think about packing it in soon for taking all that punishment

That is disappointing. It also shows what a casual fan I am because I was not aware that the plan is to stay at welter. I agree that he should be going for 140 first. He must have too much trouble making the weight. At 21 that suggests he will end up above 147 within 5 or so.

Maybe, but Orozco has been in with some wiley veteran boxers. He only has one loss to a solid world champion.

This is a solid step for VOrtiz, in his 14th fight.

Agreed but I still stick with my original prediction of Ortiz around the 5th-6th.

IMO Ortiz-Ramirez would be an awesome battle but since Vergil is now fighting at 147 it's not likely to happen, at least not in the near future.

Ortiz just confirmed he's staying at 147 and pretty much ruled out a fight with his friend Jose Ramirez at ANY weight:

https://www.boxingnews24.com/2019/08/ve ... ng-at-147/
It’ll be disappointing to a lot of boxing fans that Ortiz is moving up without winning a belt at 140 first. The fans wanted to see Ortiz capture at least one title at light welterweight before making the move to 147. Unfortunately, it’ll take too long for Ortiz to get a crack at one of the titles. Moreover, he’s already made up his mind that he won’t fight his friend Jose Ramirez.

“I’m staying at 147. I’m a welterweight now,” said Ortiz Jr. to Fighthub. “I would never fight Jose [Ramirez]. Those other belts are spoken for right now. As soon as they’re freed up with the World Series, I’m pretty sure they’re going to meet up with Jose. By the time that happens, I won’t be able to make 140 no more.

That was a good learning experience for Ortiz as he got rounds in and had to think. Yet Orozco didn't have the power to hurt Ortiz so it was a kind of training wheels fight.

It was good to see Vergil get some rounds under his belt. That was his longest fight so far and only the 2nd time he has been past the 3rd round!! I figured soemone as durable as Orozco would last longer than the others Ortiz has beaten so far.
