The soccer field will become a fistic battleground Saturday, August 17, as Jose Benavidez Jr. will battle former world champion Luis Collazo in a 10-round welterweight co-feature at Banc of California Stadium, the home of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC.
In the other co-feature, WBO junior featherweight champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete will make the second defense of his title against the undefeated Francisco “Panchito” De Vaca.
Benavidez-Collazo and Navarrete-De Vaca will headline the inaugural fight card at the year-old stadium and will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The undercard, including the returns of unbeaten super lightweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr., welterweight contender Chris van Heerden, undefeated middleweight sensation Janibek Alimkhanuly and featherweight Adam Lopez, will stream live on ESPN+ — starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

Navarrete (27-1, 23 KOs) has won 22 consecutive bouts dating back to 2012, but his breakthrough came last December when he upset Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe via unanimous decision to win the WBO junior featherweight title. Five months later, in Tucson, Arizona, he repeated the deed, this time knocking out Dogboe in the 12th round. A native of San Juan Zitlaltepec, Mexico, Navarrete had a reported 108-7 record in the amateur ranks and comes from a family of fighters. His uncle, Pedro Navarrete Sr., and two of his cousins, Pedro Navarrete Jr. and Johnny Navarrete, fought as professionals.
De Vaca (20-0, 6 KOs) was born in Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico, and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, as a small child. All but one of De Vaca’s pro fights have taken place in the Phoenix area, where he has developed into one of the region’s most popular attractions. The 24-year-old boxer-puncher made his Top Rank debut last August in Glendale, Arizona, outlasting Jesus Serrano by unanimous decision in a crowd-pleasing brawl. He last fought in February at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, where he shut out Ernesto Guerrero over eight rounds.

The reigning super bantamweight titlist will headline the August 17 edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN as he faces unbeaten but unproven Francisco de Vaca. The bout was due to run in supporting capacity to a welterweight crossroads contest between Jose Benavidez Jr. and Luis Collazo, only for those plans to hit the scrap heap after Benavidez withdrew due to injury.
The injury caused a reshuffling of the deck for Top Rank and ESPN, with the August 17 show—which airs live from Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.—to now include a 10-round featherweight clash between Jessie Magdaleno and Rafael Rivera, which was originally due to appear on the Aug. 10 ESPN+ show headlined by Carl Frampton in a featherweight bout versus Emmanuel Dominguez.

As for Collazo (39-7, 20KOs), rather than search for a late replacement the plan is now to preserve the bout with Benavidez Jr. Top Rank officials are eyeing an October date on which the fight will land.

Rodriguez is 0-1-1 in 2019, including a competitive decision loss to former world title challenger Antonio Orozco and a draw with then-unbeaten prospect Bakhtiyar Eyubov.

In his two wins over Isaac Dogboe, Emanuel Navarrete plead his case as the class of the super bantamweight division.
On Saturday evening, he simply gets to be the star of the show.
The red-hot 122-pound titlist from Mexico City, Mexico makes his second title defense as he faces unbeaten but untested Phoenix (Az.)-based countryman Francisco de Vaca (20-0, 6KOs) this weekend at Banc of California Stadium on the campus of University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, Calif. The bout airs live on ESPN, where he enjoys his first main event after having twice faced and defeated Dogboe on ESPN-aired undercards.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to headline for the first time in the United States,” Navarette (27-1, 23KOs) told BS.com. “There’s a little pressure that comes with being the center of attention, but it also provides more motivation to deliver a better effort.”
“We’re going to fill the venue all the way up to the top with all my Mexican fans in California in attendance,” vows Navarrete, who is riding a 22-fight win streak. “Normally when you fight away of home, you can feel vulnerable and alone.
“But even in New York when I fought for the title and especially in my last fight, the fans over here have always welcomed me and showed their support. The support I’ve received shows me that I have arrived at the next level. It’s a very motivating feeling and I can’t wait to fight in front of all my fans on Saturday.”

Sorry, De Vaca had NO business being in a world title fight. His last 2 bouts were 8-rounders!!!
