Tony Sibson v Frankie Lucas, Royal Albert Hall.

First fight I ever attended. Great atmosphere, watching a great (domestic) fighter, in Tony.

Yeah he was training above the Heart and Garter pub in Windsor for his fight with Randy Turpin,and for a few coppers he let the public watch him. I was taken by an uncle but i was only 4 yrs old so dont really remember much except the excitement. Now i know that the great sugarman didn't really take it that seriously, hence the result.

fragments of newsreel about Muhammad Ali in the early seventies......Bugner/ Frazier/ Foreman/ Spinks's gap teeth...... Ali was the greatest of all time...he heralded the modern age...... global media......satellite tv....Ali was the most recognizable face on earth...

to paraphrase BRIT commentater Harry Carpenter ' you could have dropped Ali out of a plane with a parachute and wherever he dropped in the world, the first person to see him would instantly recognize him and smile ' something along those lines (if any one knows the quote let me know) and its completely true of Ali in the seventies..

How do you know Peter?.

I used to spar with him a lot in the late 80's early 90's. Good fighter he was, very tough, light middle.

He gave Howard Eastman some very tough fights.

Good clubs in those days, Heathbrook, Battersea and Earlsfield. Westminster too. All SW Divs.

All good sparring at those clubs.

I had three wars with Paul hersey of Battersea in the early 90's.

Paul Hershey - yes - I know of him also - good fighter that guy!

The earliest memory I have of Olympic Boxing was watching Evander Holyfield getting disqualified, I had been watching all his fights up to that stage and thought he was a cert for the Gold medal and was gutted when he got thrown out.

Of course I was very young at the time and had no idea of his previous amateur career and didn't even give his potential professional career much thought.

As an 8 year old getting out of my bed one Sunday morning , switching on the telly and seeing Nigel Benn - Iran 'The Blade' Barkley attempt to remove each other's heads for 3 minutes on ITV.
The Pannini sticker album got dropped on the floor and I said to myself "This is some of me.!"

Dave "Boy" McAuley's first fight with Fidel Bassa, which was shown on the BBC on a Saturday night. It was an incredible epic, with the challenger just falling short after putting up a challenge worthy of a hollywood movie. The rematch never really caught fire but I was hooked after their first contest.

I was so hooked in fact that about two years later, I blew a great chance to loose my virginity to a really fit bird; she was babysitting and I'd gone along with her. Things were going on pretty well between us, as they say, but time was pressing and I knew that ITV were showing Thomas Hearns vs Dennis Andries at 10.35pm that night, and there was no telly in this house we were in. It wasn't live coverage but this was pre-internet and wild horses wouldn't have kept me away; living legend Hearns was moving straight up to 175lbs from middleweight, to challenge Andries, and such a thing was practically unheard of. I simply had to fasten my jeans and run home.

I don't know if the girl took it personally but I never got another chance with her

Shame she wasn't into the boxing !

yeah it's a euphemism that old timers use. i got it off my english teacher at college, around 8 or 9 years ago. oates is something that was definitely on his mind - he was getting on for 65 & nearing retirement yet was able to get a 34 year old good looker in the sack

What got me first into boxing?

Not sure of the exact moment, but I have some clear memories.

Don Curry vs Colin Jones.... my old man saying Jones would have won but for the cut - something HE (not I) believes to this day.... The talk of Curry vs a fellow called Sugar Ray Leonard, that I'd heard off but never seen.

Barry McGuigan winning and defending the Featherweight title... never forget refusing to get up to see McGuigan vs Cruz cause we all knew as a family what was going to happen - my old man was saying "the heat will get to him, what is he doing".... my mother woke us (me and my brother) about 5 - saying he lost.... but I thought for years he was stopped in the last.

Also Tyson and Bruno... my two favourite heavyweights.... didn't want them to fight when I first saw Tyson (didn't want to see either lose)... By Tyson vs Bruno 1, I was more exited than seeing Jane off Rod, Jane and Freddy.

I ws only really a casual fan e.g Mcguigan, bruno big fights with Benn etc etc

Then my mate said "come and watch this big eared prat with leopard skin shorts on" - he's a tool hope he gets ko'd!!!

After that I was hooked - so Naz thanks for that!!!

I remember watching that fight very clearly on TV. I had a bit of a cold that night and felt a bit rough in general, but when they showed a close up of that vile cut across Colins nose, it nearly made me puke.
