Charlie Edwards vs. Julio Cesar Martinez - 31 August 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

According to ESPN Deportes, the World Boxing Council extended the period of free negotiations for another week so that the representatives of the organization's flyweight champion, Charlie Edwards and the official challenger, Julio Cesar 'Rey' Martinez, can reach an agreement to make the mandatory defense before heading to a purse bid.

Originally the purse bid was budgeted to be held on June 7, but both Eddy Reynoso's company and Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing requested at least one more week to carry out the discussions pending agreement and to prevent anyone else from bidding on the contest.

Edwards (15-1, 6 KOs), who won the championship by dethroning the Nicaraguan Cristofer Rosales last December, and made the first successful defense against Angel Moreno on March 23, 2019 by taking a unanimous decision.

Edwards is ready to make the mandatory defense despite the fact that he expressed his desire to unify with Moruti Mthalane.

Martinez (14-1, 11 KOs) knocked out Welshman Andrew Selby in five rounds in March to take the mandatory challenger position, since the battle had been a final eliminator, and since then raised his hand to go in search of the green and gold belt at 112 pounds.

This week the negotiations intensified and Eddy Reynoso sent a proposal to do it on Mexican soil, according to sources close to the discussions, while Eddie Hearn was also about to make the proposal to take the contest to English soil, home of the world champion.

Another possibility could be that the fight takes place on US soil, where they have already worked on some occasions, since the last two rivals of Canelo, who is managed by Reynoso, have been promoter by Eddie Hearn's company.

In the event that there is no agreement, the WBC will designate a new date for the purse bid.

This fight needs to be on neutral ground & not just for fairness. Charlie's talking about unification's & he's not going to get all of those in the UK. Pro fight atmosphere is very different to Amateur & he needs as much experience as he can get.

Edwards had been linked to a unification fight with IBF champion Moruti Mthalane, but Mthalane’s side declined on the basis of their fighter needing more time to recover from his victory over Masayuki Kuroda. There’s every reason to believe that the fight will be made if Edwards defeats Martinez, as both men expressed interest and share management.

Charlie Edwards has now agreed terms to defend his WBC flyweight title against Julio Cesar Martinez next, talkSPORT.com have been told.

Responding to a query about the status of the fight, a WBC rep informed talkSPORT.com: “As to Edwards vs Martinez, the parties appear to have agreed to terms.

“The fight will be announced shortly.”

Edwards’ promoter Eddie Hearn later confirmed in an iFL TV interview that the bout could land on the undercard of Vasyl Lomachenko vs Luke Campbell, if that contest happens in the UK.

Hearn previously stated that it looked likely a deal would not be made for Loma vs Campbell – forcing the contest to purse bids which would result in it taking place Stateside.

However, he has now updated and said an agreement is ‘nearly there’ with purse bids being postponed.

If a deal is reached, the fight will take place on August 31 at the O2 Arena in London – with Edwards vs Martinez possible as chief support.

Wants to stay clear of Mexico - Selby’s fight was 8,000 above sea level - gasping for Air.

Expect this will be a World Title fight added to Loma/Campbell plus Fury/Povetkin as the 3 main fights.

Julio Cesar Martinez has parlayed the best win of his career into his biggest fight to date.

The flyweight contender from Mexico will travel to jolly old England for his first career title fight, as he faces reigning titlist Charlie Edwards on August 31 at O2 Arena in London.

Once formally announced, the bout will serve in supporting capacity to the three-belt lightweight title unification clash between 2012 Olympic Gold medalists Vasiliy Lomachenko and Luke Campbell.

The two sides reached an agreement in late June, avoiding a purse bid hearing. Martinez is the mandatory challenger to Edward’s World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title.

England’s Edwards (15-1, 6KOs) will attempt the second defense of the flyweight crown he claimed in a minor upset 12-round win over then division-best Cristofer Rosales last December, also at the O2 Arena.

More shocking than the win itself was the manner in which Edwards dominated the fight, which was his second attempt at a major belt. His first crack resulted in his lone loss, a 10th round stoppage of John Riel Casimero in Sept. 2016, just eight fights into his pro career.

Seven straight wins have followed, including a 12-round shutout of Spain’s Angel Moreno this past March at Copper Box Arena in Hackney Wick, England. The bout took place just hours before Edwards would learn of his next official challenger.

The night ended with a massive upset, as previously unbeaten Welsh contender Andrew Selby suffered a shocking 5th round knockout at the hands of Martinez (14-1, 11KOs).

Even with the fight taking place in his native Mexico, few expected Martinez to turn the trick in what was a huge leap in competition level. The 24-year old knockout artist came up aces, extending his win streak to 14 straight after losing his pro debut nearly four years ago.

With the title opportunity comes his first trip abroad, as the Mexico City native has fought exclusively in Mexico.

Confirmation of Edwards-Martinez follows news from earlier Wednesday of another major fight added to the bill, a heavyweight clash between former title challengers Hughie Fury and Alexander Povetkin.

Losing on his professional debut in October 2015, ‘El Rey’ has since won fourteen fights on the bounce, scoring eleven knockouts in that impressive run. Halting Selby means no opponent has gone more than six rounds with the 24-year-old since June 2017.

“He’s a very tough Mexican who can bang with both hands,” said Edwards. “His record shows that he’s a massive puncher and we saw that in his last fight against Andrew Selby. He got him out of there in the fifth round and was hurting him on a number of occasions. He’s coming to bring it and he’s going to try and rip that WBC title off me. This is his World Cup final.

“He’s going to put it all on the line. He’s going to be coming hard and fast from early to try and put me under pressure, but I believe my boxing skills and the experience that I’ve gained throughout my short pro career will see me through. I expect to have a punch perfect performance. I believe that he will bring out the very best in me.

“Timing is everything, I believe this is my era. I have arrived at my destination at the right time and I’m loving the journey. This is another legacy fight for me, and I believe that I will build a great legacy. To fight your Mandatory Challenger on one of the biggest cards in British boxing this year is brilliant because it showcases my skills around the world.”

“I can’t wait to challenge for the WBC Flyweight World title in London,”
said Martinez. “I’ll be taking that famous green and gold belt back to Mexico with me. I have already knocked out one Brit and on August 31 I will make it two.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn said: “This is another great fight added to a brilliant card at The O2. We saw Martinez knock out Andrew Selby recently in his Final Eliminator and he is an aggressive, fearless fighter who will be coming to try and take Charlie’s belt. Charlie is now established as the best 112lb fighter in the World right now and I expect another brilliant performance from him at The O2. This will be a fast paced, explosive fight and there’s still plenty more to come on this card!”

Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing, said: “Charlie Edwards has been an enthralling success story in British boxing and it’s fantastic to add his next WBC title defence to the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Luke Campbell bill.

“Charlie has grown as a fighter since claiming the WBC belt on that emotional night last December, but Julio Cesar Martinez is a real danger-man as shown in that win over Andrew Selby.

“We also have Hughie Fury’s heavyweight clash against Alexander Povetkin on an action-packed evening, with more fights to be added before Luke Campbell’s epic World title battle with Lomachenko.”

All ive seen of Martinez is the Selby KO which was highly impressive, creased him with a body shot so Edwards gonna have to keep on his toes, never realised Martinez only had a dozen or so fights, lost a 4 round SD on his debut then won everything since, I seen he also had a points win over Edgar Sosa

Edwards in good form though dominated Moreno last time out and was able to outbox him and Rosales who brought the pressure as I'm sure Martinez will, not a puncher but picks his shots nicely and has a great engine to keep the punches flowing, could be the most dangerous defence yet for him but I fancy him on points in the end

Are we not going to discuss tomorrow night's other ritual execution? Spicy hot senor Martinez looked in phenomenal nick at the weigh in, whereas Edwards is drawn and gaunt. They're going to dub Julio 'Fly Swatter' after tomorrow night. Any British man of eight stone or less will tremble at the sound of his name!

I agree that Edwards looked pretty drained at the weigh in today, possibly a step too far continuing to make the flyweight limit. Martinez showed good body work against Selby & I'm sure he will be looking for the same tomorrow.

I feel for Edwards he was taking a beating in there but Martinez should've been DQ'd(edit changed to ND), clear as day that last finishing body shot was when he was already down, left hand clearly prevented him from getting up, I never really agreed with commentary having Edwards controlling things, I thought Martinez landing some heavy combinations to the head and body, it looked like he was taking Edwards apart when he got up close, he hurt Edwards to the body but Edwards kind of froze and took about 20 unanswered shots before finally wilting, the writing might have been on the wall but Martinez nobody to blame but himself

A stupid blowing of a victory for Martinez. He would probably successfully go for a kill, if not the last punch, if Edwards continued.

Edwards is a very lucky champion. Beat a guy Selby had already trounced for the title, very soft 1st defence then milked a late shot for all it was worth tonight.

These late shots or low punches are common place in boxing and Edwards was done anyway. Martinez should have showed more self control but why single him out when it happens every month.

Agree with Ricky, Edwards took a dive. All the damage was done before the late punch landed. Looked a fake overreaction.

For someone who talks big, he will never live this one down.

Martinez is so f@cking stupid. He was battering Edwards and would've swatted him away that round or shortly after. Instead he throws a totally late shot and now flys back to Meh-he-co beltless.

Expect Edwards to move up., if they rematch like ordered he's just getting another whooping. Martinez had no problem punching on the move and would catch up to him again with those heavy Mexican hands.

I thought it was a dive live. But on replay he was not only down but had been down long enough that he had relaxed his body. Then a full power shot when not ready. It's Gunna hurt. Mabey he could of got up. But should he have to continue with the extra damage from a clearly illegal shot. Was on the way out but Martinez's fault realy.

I am willing to give Edwards the benefit of the doubt with that, because he had just taken a bunch of hard shots both head and body before that, and was already in enough trouble to go down, the punch was wound up and landed flush against his body, and he never saw it coming and clearly hadn't braced for it.

Martinez was such an idiot

The shot on Edwards was OTT but the Buatsi low blow was ok according to Sky? And no one cares when Fowler twats them with a late one on the floor either.

I think at world level that Edwards is a weak champion and needs to be matched very carefully.

100%.

This was a mandatory. Any voluntary defences you can bet it will be an easy touch.
