Glenn McCrory: That Night I Fought for the Title, David Was Pulling Me Along

Post by thenonpareil »

“Then Lumumba gets introduced and walks out in the center of the ring with his hands by his side all arrogant. At that moment, I thought, ‘I’m going to fornicating knock your head off.’ I was so fired up. Everybody had told me, ‘Box him, because he’s a big puncher. Use your jab, move, box, move, box,’ but when he stood in the center of the ring, that changed my tactics for the fight. That’s why I went for him, and he just wasn’t ready for that. For the first six or seven rounds it carried on that way, and then he recovered and started to get back into it. He hit me with two right hands and perforated my eardrum, which nobody had ever done to me before.

“About round eight, it started to get hard. Then I got into a clinch and looked over and saw my brother at ringside smiling, waving his arms about and being as animated as hell. I thought to myself, ‘Come on, son. Here we go.’ It was just at the right time when I needed to lift my spirits. Then the crowd started stamping their feet, and the rest is history.” McCrory won a very wide points decision over twelve rounds to become the IBF world cruiserweight champion. “My speech in the ring after I’d won the title was, ‘Stanley dole office. I’m not coming back!’

Lumumba gets a bad press for his meagre record going into the fight and his subdued performance on the night but he was a dangerous puncher and dangerous punchers can take you out at any time, so this was a solid performance from Glenn in a proper world title fight. Lumumba, who was 29 at the time, entered the ring with just 10 fights but had stopped Liam Coleman, Winston Burnett and Jose Seys in one, two and three rounds respectively in Scandinavia (that's quick over Burnett) and floored huge James Broad before losing a 10-round decision on the Tyson-Tucker undercard in Las Vegas in August 1987 and Broad took some flooring. The globetrotting Kenyan was even based in London for a while under the management of Tony Lavelle, appearing on the Witherspoon-Bruno show at Wembley Stadium in July 1986 with an easy six-round decision over American 'opponent' Walter Santemore before outscoring Alfredo Evangelista over eight rounds in Spain a couple of months later. He looked good in sparring here.
Sadly, Lavelle was killed in a horror smash on the M6 on the way to a show in Manchester shortly afterwards, with Lumumba also in the car. The fighter smashed up his right hand and lost momentum, reappearing 11 months later in the States with that loss to Broad and two useful decisions over Alfonso "Fonz" Ratliff and Jeff Lampkin, although he looked lucky to get the nod over Lampkin and did more sparring than fighting over there.
McCrory turned pro as a 19-year-old heavyweight under Alan Minter's old manager Doug Bidwell and racked up 13 straight wins before the dangerous but seemingly safe John Westgarth hammered him in four rounds in Gateshead in 1985, after which he lost repeatedly and looked headed for oblivion. Hughroy Currie nearly knocked him out of the ring with a big left hook in two rounds in Oldham in October 1986 on the old Fight Night series. However, still a young man, he dropped down to cruiserweight and began picking up the wins again, including a close 12-round decision over Chisanda Mutti for the Commonwealth title and another tight decision over strong Londoner Tee Jay for the British title. He won 11 straight fights in the lead-up to the Lumumba showdown and deserved his crack.

I read that Patrick Lumumba passed away at age 41? Anyone know the cause? Cancer? Alcoholism?

Pipe down, you have to be in the fight to be schooled, Glen entered the land of the giants for a payday, it was a mission impossible.

I prefer to " pipe up " thank you

having met Glenn Mcrory numerous times in the past and having seen him fight as well as the likes of Westgarth I can say with certainty he was way out of his depth against Lewis and got schooled .
