Prospects Carlos Gongora & Abraham Nova: thoughts, impressions?

Post by JohnReed »

What's the word concerning unbeaten prospects Carlos Gongora and Abraham Nova? Gongora is a 16-0 (12 KO's) middleweight who fought in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Nova is a super-featherweight, currently 15-0 (11 KO's). Both guys fight this week in Boston.

How do you guys rate the abilities of Gongora and Nova? Any thoughts about their career prospects, or impressions about their past fights?

I'm watching Gongora's fights now. He sure was an exciting, hard-punching amateur. He's tall, southpaw, roughly 6'1,," and he tended to bury his amateur foes under a hailstorm of leather, all his shots swung from the hip, starting at long range. Gongora's KO1 victory over previously unbeaten Ronald Mixon impressed me too. In that bout, Gongora showed shades of Mike Spinks (remember the way Spinks executed dudes with single right hands to the head)?

I noticed that Gongora seems to have calmed down a lot since his amateur days. He's not the hyperkinetic, riled-up fighter-puncher he was back then. Today, Gongora fights a slower paced bout. Does that he's developed professional polish, or is it a sign of complacency? I can't tell. But either way, it looks like Gongara still packs pineapple bombs in his left hand.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.
