WBO denies Whyte Appeal

Boxvng Scene: You can add the World Boxing Organization (WBO) to the list of sanctioning bodies not expected to grant Dillian Whyte a title shot anytime soon.

An appeal filed by highly-ranked heavyweight contender from England to protest the sanctioning body’s appointment of Oleksandr Usyk as its heavyweight mandatory contender was denied on Aug. 15, following a month-long process to review the matter. The upheld ruling will allow Usyk to next challenge the winner of the unified title fight rematch between Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua, which is due to take place later this year.

The ruling—a copy of which was sent to Whyte, Usyk and their respective promoters and legal teams—is just the latest piece of bad news to come this summer for Whyte, who remains provisionally suspended by the World Boxing Council (WBC) after having tested positive for a banned substance prior to his July 20 interim heavyweight title win over Oscar Rivas. The substance was discovered during random drug testing as conducted by United Kingdom Anti-Doping (UKAD) agency.

Anyone want to chime in by saying the WBO is protecting Ruiz or AJ, depending on the winner of the rematch?

This is kind of old news. Whyte abandoned any hope of retaining his WBO ranking after becoming the WBC interim champion, which is normal.

Whyte rejected the AJ rematch, because he was being paid less than what he commanded for Chisora.

New news. Came out today. Whatever assumption you have on Whyte abandoning his WBO route is contradicted by his team appealing to the WBO. Makes little sense.

Eddie has been very good to Whyte, those PPV that weren't really PPV. If you convert £ into $ he has been earning Wilder money with the only title being a silver belt that turned out to be irrelevant anyway.

I'm not sure if I agree with your mind-set.

Boxers are known as "PRIZE fighters" not "PRIDE fighters". A world-rated fighter shouldn't be compelled to receive a smaller purse than he would facing other contenders for the sake of challenging for a world title.

And as fight fans, we shouldn't support world champions or promoters that admittedly submit low-ball offers and then subsequently proclaim "duck" whenever they're rejected.

Let's not forget that Eddie Hearn actually confirmed Dillian Whyte's assertion that he was being offered less to face AJ than he received for the Chisora fight. And that's not right!

This feels like dejavu

Wembley April date needed filling, the fans were expectant.
When they couldn't get Wilder or Fury (both demanding a 50-50 split), they wanted to cancel and make Miller at MSG.
Whyte was the only other opponent that could fill Wembley.

The low ball offer worked for both camps though

Joshua's team can save face claim he tried to fill the Wembley date. Remember lots of fans had already bought plane tickets and booked hotels.

Whyte can say they low balled me, and continue to try and get his fight with Wilder, from his perspective an easier win. With the WBC belt he can most definitely get big money against Joshua in a grudge match unification in the UK. Rather than taking a risky fight against Joshua and slipping down the rankings and losing his status as a PPV headliner in his own right.

So the upshot is this then allowed Joshua to follow his American dream, whilst not making a defence for 8months!

I was still pissed off though, as Miller didn't deserve a title shot, so I smiled a little when Ruiz stopped Joshua.
