Let's Talk Boxing Stances

Post by Seamus »

To begin things, it sounds funny after all these years, but going back to when I first started following the sport in 1971, I've had this life long habit of looking at fighters, including a great many future Hall of Famers, and saying to myself "He's got that left hand too low" (in the case of those with orthodox stances) or in the case of southpaws "He's got that right too low". Then I'd watch a guy like Starling or Qawi and say "Now that's how I'd have my hands if I was a boxer". Anyone else make various observations about boxer's stances over the years ?

I actually think for some guys it makes sense to have your left low. You can usually throw your left faster if it is low. Obviously you are in not protected well and you would think get hit more often.
However, if you have great reflexes and movement, you don't need to hold it high. Ali and Roy Jones are a couple of examples of this. In their primes they were great defensively even though they held their left low.

The cross arm that Archie Moore and Ken Norton was interesting. You would think it would be hard to launch an attack but they obviously were able to.
