Fritzie Zivic's dirty tactics ?

Post by goose 5 »

If Zivic wasn't able to use so many foul tactics, how good/great would he have been ? People argue that the fighters were better years ago, but the refs certainly weren't. Zivic wouldn't get away with that stuff now. Television- especially slow motion replays- would play a large role in Zivic tempering his behavior.

Or Marciano, he hit Cockell with just about every illegal move you can think of and he didn't get a single warning.

I'm sure Marciano could have fought as a "Middleweight"
if he had turned pro younger then he did if he had wanted too anyway which I doubt
Don Cockell was about 17 years old when he turned pro in June 1946.( born September 1928)
of course he probably wouldn't have had the strength that he did.
BTW Archie Moore fought as a middleweight when he was younger too but actually had a
physical frame larger then Marciano did.

Zivic was a choirboy compared to Henry Armstrong who would hit you in the balls (unintentionally) every round, and used his elbows when looping them right hand punches.

henry armstrong was an "excuse me" fighter.....hit you in the balls and then say "excuse me". thumb in the eye..."excuse me",,,and so on. Wilie pep was was the same thing, but not as often. The saddler fights were classic...sandy was an open dirty fighter, willie was subtle ....and not as foul .....but he always knew where the referee had the best view .

Just for the record, it's noted that Henry Armstrong, hit Davey Day south of the border, numerous times in every round,
Armstrong came out in the 11th round, hitting Davey five times in the ball zone, and did everything else to beat Day.
Davey Day fought Armstrong half of the fight blind (closed shut) in one eye and other peeper was just a squint,
Here's the kicker, up until the 10th rd. Day was ahead. The ref. only took two rounds away from Hank. They also reported Armstrong threw 2000 punches in 12 rds. John Lardner sports columnist New York mentioned, Armstrong had a Full House of ( A to Z) vitamins to beat Day. Armstrong would not give Davey a rematch. Lou Amber's was stripped of his N.B.A. Title for not meeting Day for the Title fight before 3/22/1940. The NY commission broke with the N.B.A. and signed Lew Jenkins to fight Amber's for their version of the Title. Mike Jacobs wouldn't allow Day to fight any of his house Champions.
