Campbell performed very well. I thought it was a close one, but that may have been part of the hysteria a live fight creates. Could look like a wide win for Loma on second viewing. Either way, Luke really surprised me.

Yeah, Loma canvassed with an overhand left at one point and I thought he might be tempting Campbell's right hand up for later. McCallum loved using repetition to deceive, but I'm guessing Loma either decided that Campbell was too smart for that, or that he was already winning with a nice level of risk.tobyh5 wrote: ↑01 Sep 2019, 06:58I was a little confused by the lack of bodywork by Loma at some key moments. He opened him up with that bodyshot in the 5th, and that was clearly hurting Luke but then in the next round his attacks where at the head, even when he pinned him on the ropes for moments he still neglected a step off to the side for a dig in hard to the body.
I think Campbell could've been tricked at times, especially towards the end when fatigue had him a bit square on the backfoot, but I reckon Loma felt he was just a bit too big to step it up against with the fight almost won.
Had that been Farmer in the late rounds, for example, he'd have applied more pressure. But if it carries a reasonable risk and you don't need to... I don't feel that either man went beyond 80% of their ability at any one time — it never really lit up, but it was a fight of serious technical attrition and they were both knackered by the end.

Absolutely, it's one of my biggest gripes with Loma, he's done it in several fights now where things look primed for him to finish the opponent, and instead he'll back off and do some nifty footwork or something. Frustrates me a lot watching him and it's a reason I find it hard to really be a major fantobyh5 wrote: ↑01 Sep 2019, 06:58 I was a little confused by the lack of bodywork by Loma at some key moments. The 11th round knockdown came from a head shot but some really strong body shots which preceded it had opened it up and was what really hurt Luke.
I am not saying he did not attack the body, he just did not press the moments he should have and did not attack it enough considering how much it troubled Campbell

Things I learned from this fight...
Loma is still an ATG, amazing fighter. I think he's reached his weigh max though
I never took much interest in Campbell before but he's really good. A rare case of he genuinely improves/learns from his loses. He'll becoming a champ soon

To put things in perspective though, PBF isn't naturally much bigger than Lomo yet he went up to light middle and beat Canelo.

And little middle compared to light is much bigger still!
PBF went from super feather to light middle
And Canelo is a touch better than Campbell

PBF was a super feather at 19 and while Loma was only at feather still in his late 20s. Floyd fought Canelo at light middle at close to the same age Loma is now as a small lightweight
Floyd is a good few inches taller, has a way longer reach, and is a naturally bigger guy. He's much better than Loma too, but defo extra size allowed him to go up the divisions more.

The much better than Loma bit was my whole point!

at this point I'm not aware of ANYONE who's MUCH BETTER...margaret thatcher wrote: ↑02 Sep 2019, 13:41

I've not read all of the thread but I have read the name PBF being mentioned - I am not sure in what context..... but that would be an appealing fight for me now. 42 year old Floyd vs Loma at 147.
I honestly think Floyd would do him, I think Loma has maxed out in weight and I think Floyd still has enough to catch Loma - whether he could sustain it for 12 rounds at 42 would be the intriguing thing - for me Davis and Garcia aside that is the most intriguing fight for Loma - I think he beats everyone at Lightweight down to Feather (Davis and Garcia aside) comfortably enough - The Light Welter champions are good - there might be some intrigue with them..... Spence and Crawford win comfortably enough.
To be honest, whilst I love Loma and have him "right up there" - I've never quite seen him as P4P #1 - I have Crawford at #1 and I think there is a 3 way battle for #2 between Loma, Usyk and Inuoe. Saturday didn't make me change my mind either way.
