Oleksandr Usyk vs. Chazz Witherspoon - 12 October 2019

Press Release

Aleksandr Usyk will face Tyrone Spong on his Heavyweight debut at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago on October 12, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Usyk (16-0 12 KOs) joins the big guns having dominated the Cruiserweight division, leaving the 200lbs scene as the undisputed champion after knocking out Tony Bellew in Manchester in November, his first fight in a multi-fight deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA.

That win for the Ukrainian 2012 Olympic king was a remarkable fourth in a row in hostile territory having won the first Cruiserweight installment of the World Boxing Super Series by beating Marco Huck, Mairis Breidis and Murat Gassiev in their backyards, unifying the division in two of those fights to lead to his clinical win in England.

Now the pound-for-pound master will look to translate his incredible success into glory at the Heavyweight division, but faces a stiff examination of those goals in the form of Spong (14-0 13 KOs).

The 33 year old Florida-based contender can make a huge statement in the Windy City and risks his #4 rating with the WBO to take on Usyk. The Surinamese-Dutchman was taken the distance for the first time in Suriname where he successfully defended his WBO and WBC Latino titles against Ytalo Perea in December, and comes into the bout on the back of a 13th KO win from 14 fights with a second round victory in Mexico on Saturday.

Spong joined the sweet science after leaving a stellar kickboxing career behind, winning 91 of his 100 bouts in a 13-year career littered with accolades and titles before officially retiring from kickboxing in April 2016 after his last bout in December 2014, turning pro in the boxing ring in March 2015.

Usyk’s status as the former long-reigning WBO king means he is the mandatory challenger for that title that Andy Ruiz Jr sensationally ripped from Anthony Joshua in New York in December along with the IBF and WBA straps, so the stakes are high for both Usyk and Spong ahead of the Ruiz Jr-Joshua rematch in December.

“I am very excited to make my Heavyweight debut in Chicago on October 12, live on DAZN,” said Usyk. “Spong is a fast and powerful Heavyweight who has had much success in the ring. I must come through this test to challenge for the World Heavyweight title I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

“After achieving most of my goals as a kick boxer and becoming one of the most decorated champions in the history of the sport, I wanted to test myself in the difficult and challenging sport of boxing. I have worked tirelessly during the last three years and now have the opportunity to prove my worth as a boxer against perhaps the best pound for pound, and most technically sound boxer in the World. Some may think the challenge may be too difficult, but I believe in myself, and look forward to being victorious on October 12.”

“Usyk’s Heavyweight debut is one of the most hotly anticipated boxing moments of 2019 and personally, I can’t wait to see it,”
said Hearn. “Oleksandr is a phenomenon who dominated the Cruiserweight division becoming undisputed after just 15 fights. Now, as he prepares to challenge for the World Heavyweight title, he must first overcome Tyrone Spong in Chicago. Spong will be explosive and dangerous and we expect an electric heavyweight battle at the Wintrust Arena, live on DAZN.”

Tickets are on sale now for Usyk vs. Spong, with a stacked undercard to be released imminently. Tickets start at just $40 plus booking fees at: https://www.ticketmaster.com.

I seen Spong a few times years ago when he first turned over, think I saw him on a couple German cards and he did look pretty exciting from memory but he was fighting pony, the next thing that springs to mind is the fella Arsejiff or whatever his name was being obsessed with him, Spong disappeared off the radar same time he did, looking through Spong's record he's yet to fight anyone of note so this is a huge step up

I would've much preferred the Takam fight but I don't mind this TBH, I love Usyk and its his Heavyweight debut so I'm intrigued, I'm not scared to admit i'd be devastated if Usyk got iced though, that would piss me right off but HW or no HW I just cant see Usyk being silly enough to get careless here, Spong has fought cans but 13KOs in 14 wins has to be respected, Usyk will probably do his usual have a look for a couple of rounds, try to counter Spong before getting to work and taking him apart in the middle rounds

I am slowly getting tired of this sport. A fan since 1985 and now, I am losing my love for it and find Hearn is behind so much of what I dislike.

He says "I will never work with a drug cheat" then signs drug cheats. He covers up for cheats, he outs other guys for cheating, he even jumped in to a Jarrell Miller interview on Saturday night and said how much he likes him and they will work together.

Man is utter scum and is damaging the integrity of this sport.

With his wounds healed and armed with a full training camp, TJ Doheny is set to embark on a run towards a second title reign.

The former junior featherweight titlist will return to the ring this weekend, facing Colombia’s Jesus Martinez on the undercard of a DAZN-streamed show this Saturday at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.

All eyes will be on the evening’s main event, as former World cruiserweight champion and reigning 2018 Fighter of the Year Oleksandr Usyk (16-0, 12KOs) makes his heavyweight debut as he faces unbeaten prospect and former kickboxing superstar Tyrone Spong.

“It’s the start of the build back towards another world title,” Mike Altamtura, Doheny’s manager told Boxing Scene. “He’s been in camp for eight weeks and is excited to get back into the mix.”

Tell me what promoter is helping the sport integrity then?, at least Hearn is vocal about drug cheats and them being banned for life, PEDs are that rife its impossible to be a top level promoter without dealing with them at some point

Spong: This Is Manipulative Attempt To Remove Me From Usyk Fight

“We have been contacted by VADA to inform us that there has been an adverse finding in Tyrone Spong’s test,” Hearn noted through his verified Twitter account Monday evening. “It has been sent to the State of Illinois commission and further information will be released in the morning.

“We have reserve opponents standing by.”

BS.com has learned that Spong’s “A” sample showed an adverse finding of Clomiphene, which is commonly found in female fertility prescription medication. As it relates to usage by males (obviously not looking to get pregnant), it has been deemed by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code as a masking agent, hence landing on the banned list both in- and out-of-competition.

VADA’s standard are far stricter, as the Las Vegas-based agency boasts a zero tolerance when it comes to all banned substances.

The positive test result was released by VADA to all parties involved with Saturday’s DAZN-streamed card. Hearn is the lead promoter for the event, feeling the need to alert the public of the news.

“We received the email (at roughly 7:00pm ET),” Marcos Gonzales, Spong’s manager told Boxing Scene. “Eddie had already tweeted out the news by the time I saw the email notification.

“It’s very strange because Tyrone was just informed that he tested negative from the other tests we did.”

There are already whispers that plans are in place to remove Spong from the show, although the matter is subject to a hearing with the Illinois State Athletic Commission. Spong’s team planned to file a request for the “B” sample to be tested, although the timing of the news coupled with the process in having those results come back would come well after Saturday’s scheduled contest.

The timing of it all is what doesn’t sit well with their side.

“We had a face off today, and all of a sudden Usyk decided to shut it down,” claims Gonzalez. “We just had a weird feeling all day that something was off.

“Everything started to make sense after receiving that email from VADA.”

More direct to the point was the drug testing casualty.

“This is a set up,”
Spong insisted to Boxing Scene. “I vehemently deny that I have ever taken the substance named in VADA’s report. I have asked for testing of the B sample at a laboratory of my choosing. “Testing performed last week at the request of the Illinois Boxing Commission showed, what I’ve always known, that I’m a clean fighter.”

The situation marks the fourth DAZN event promoted by Hearn where a scheduled main event participant has tested positive for a banned substance.

As for Spong, all he wants is for this matter to go through the proper channels and for the chance to clear his name and proceed with the biggest opportunity of his career.

“I ask Matchroom to publicly acknowledge that I tested negative for all performance enhancing substances just a few days ago,” notes Spong, who is sensing the deck is being stacked against him. “Any adverse finding is impossible and in my opinion a manipulative attempt to remove me from this fight.

“I voluntarily agreed to VADA testing because I have nothing to hide. I will not rest until I’m absolved of this outlandish allegation and will pursue all legal avenues available to me, including seeking legal damages to correct this wrong.”

I appreciate that they are all dripping in sleaze and contridiction but I cannot help how I feel and what is making me feel this way.

He may well be vocal about drug cheats, but it depends whether he promotes them or not. The expression I was taught donkey years ago was "Action Compass".

Watch action, not words.

eg
If someone says you are important to them, but they do not make time for you - you are not actually important.

Hearn says drug cheats should be banned. He says he will not promote them. He then promotes them, continously. Action Compass.
