Stamford Harris (HW) odd weight listed

Post by Controversial »

https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/127

Boxrec lists Harris's weight as 188lb against Charley Chase on the 21st November 1968 yet only 9 days earlier on the 12th November his weight is listed as 222lb. A few months after the 188lb entry his weight is 42lb heavier at 230lb.

It seems unlikely he lost 34lb in 9 days so the weight of 188lb doesn't make sense, should it be removed?

21st April 1969 - 230lbs
21st November 1968 - 188lbs
12th November 1968 - 222lbs

In all his other fights from 1968 onwards his weight is listed between 222-246lbs making the 188lb listing even less likely. The only other time he was recorded as being under 200lb was 4 years earlier in 1964 where he was listed as 198lb.

Sorry Matt one other thing regarding his height. Harris is listed as 6'5 1/2" on boxrec but footage seen and written word describes him as being short, I posted this a few years ago as did another poster named scorpio83

Also in another snippet from Sam Pollak, a sports editor talking about Angelo Dundee, mentioned a time he was meant to spar with Ali but it changed to Stamtord Harris.

"Being young and stupid, I had no objections, and I was scheduled to spar one round with Ali. However, he was called out of town for some reason, and Angelo substituted another of his boxers, a guy named Stamford Harris, billed as the heavyweight champion of the West Indies. At least I got to wear a pair of Ali's boxing shoes, they being the only size 13s Angelo could find. With several of the boxers I had covered curious enough to watch at the gym, I stood in my corner of the ring. In the other corner was Mr. Harris, who was not a tall man, but _ I was quick to notice _ had arms like legs. Angelo was in his face, shouting at him over and over. "Don't hurt him! Don't hurt him! Don't hurt him."

Unfortunately the video doesn't play for me.

I watched the Jerry Quarry vs. Stamford Harris fight on youtube and Klompton is correct. Stamford Harris stood about 5'9" and here's the source to prove that he was shorter than Quarry.

I zeroed out the height. Perhaps someone can pull a credible height from a news source, for us to add.

Cheers Matt, back to the initial query, his weight still shows as 188lb for me?

I thought I had fixed that, but apparently not. I'm still getting used to the new system as an editor, so bear with me...

I dont know his exact height but Harris was very short for a HW. He was shorter than Quarry who was about 5'11".

Before the video was deleted from YouTube, I watched the fight between Jerry Quarry and Stamford Harris as I think Harris stood 5'9" which was 3 inches shorter than Quarry who stood 6'0".

Shame that fight got deleted from YouTube, that would clear it up.

Me too and I watched the height difference between Quarry and Harris before the video was deleted for whatever reason.
