Carl Froch: Andre Ward’s style was borderline cheating, beat Kovalev with low blows

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Froch would catch wind of Ward’s comments and respond by saying that it’s not really his intent to troll Ward, but that he’s just honest about his opinion and he believes Ward has a history of questionable tactics between the ropes.

“I’m just honest about what I see and I think his style is borderline cheating. Listen, he beat me fair and square, let’s get that straight, but it was one of the worst fights I’ve been involved in since Matthew Barney, who nobody will know. That’s when somebody smothers you, puts their head on your chest, and basically holds you at any given moment they can, and ducks low.

“You have to admire him for going through his career unbeaten, but he’s not an entertainer, and in an entertaining sport, it’s good to entertain. Andre Ward’s style is effective, but it’s boring. You’ll never rewatch a Ward fight. He fought the most feared man in boxing, Sergey Kovalev twice. Let’s be honest, he beat him with low blows in the end.”

Froch continued by saying that the truth hurts and that if Ward has a problem with it then he welcomes him to do something about it. Froch would finish by saying that Ward only showed up to the UK in the first place because he knew he out of town. But even still, Froch thanks Ward for turning him into the animal he became after that fight — going on to sell 80,000 tickets at Wembley Stadium — while saying Ward couldn’t sell out a phone booth.

I have stuck up for Froch many times and even laugh at some of the spiked comments at George and Degale but this is frankl pathetic.

Jesus. I love Carl Froch, and he is the best British fighter of the last decade. But this is taking a liberty.

I appreciate there is an anti-Foch bias on this board these days, but I agree with a lot of what he said there. Ward was never fun to watch, excellent technition and tactition, but not remotely entertaining.

He did beat Kovalev with low blows, even Stevie Wonder could have seen that. Which was a shame as he looked to me like he was on his way to getting the victory clean before he took full advantage of the referee's leniency.

Beating Kovalev clean would have allowed him to retire as widely regarded p4p #1, but he chose the easy option and retired with a bit of a cloud over his head imo.

This is boring. They’re both ex-fighters now.

Exactly. Ward was quality as was Froch.

Nobody ever increases their own stock by whining, not sure why Froch does it.

Was wondering where Froch was. Maybe wasn't invited because Ward was in the building.,

Ward was painful to watch and now as a commentator he's painful to listen to. Froch was correct on every point.

For the most part Ward was boring when he was active.

Ward did beat Kovalev with low blows, but it's already been discussed, and it doesn't matter anymore.

I'll never give him any credit for those performances though. He's 0-2 against Kovalev in my view, and I'd tell him that to his face.

Froch was right about another thing too. I've never watched an Andre Ward fight twice.

Not really. I just wouldn't give the man credit for something he didn't achieve in my eyes. Even if I were talking to him. I doubt I'd walk up to him and say that first thing, but it'd come up somewhere in the conversation I'll bet. Provided we talked long.

It always surprised me that the 'purist fans' and 'oh I love the sweet science of it' people really liked Ward, he was excellent but a very rough fighter who was actually a strong bully. Maybe it's because he wasn't a puncher and usually won by decision that he wet some 'I like the technical stuff' willies. I'd say Kov actually had nicer looking technical boxing in their fights and did better of the two outside, but Ward roughed him up inside (and yes, in the second fight some shots were low).

Never unstood why froch winds so many people up. He's a funny guy. Great wind up merchant.

He's pretty much on the money here too. He admits ward beat him fair and square so I don't really see what the issue is.

Have you spoken to him and confirmed that he's just entirely on the wind up? I wouldn't say the comments he made are really funny at all tbh. What is humorous about them?

Though certainly many fans share his thoughts

Froch you got given a boxing lesson by Ward. Now get over it mate. Your lucky you didn't fight Calzaghe because you would have been given a beating.

However he is right. I'd rather watch a Froch fight than a Ward right any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Joe Calzaghe would have toyed with him for as long as it would take to wear him out before taking him out .

Froch has in the past acknowledged this and knows he was not at the same level in terms of boxing ability .

I watched the Paul Smith fight twice just for the sheer fun of it
