Some questions for American fans ?
Some questions for American fans ?
I would like to know more about American boxing fans, generally speaking (about majority, there are always exceptions, less or more).
Do the non-Mexican Latinos (Niaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica, etc....) root for Mexican fighters or against them ? I know for rivalry between Puerto Rico (and Cuba) and Mexico.
What about white conservative Americans ? Do they support non-white American fighters ?
Do American fans always root against European fighters ?
Thanks in advance !

Re: Some questions for American fans ?
Americans are a diverse group of people. I'm sure you have some that would always root for the White guy or the Black guy or what have you.
I personally root for you or not based on whether or not I like watching you fight. I don't give a sh*t where you're from.
And to answer the other question...in my experience it would seem to me that most Latinos don't like Latinos from other countries. Not sure what that's about, but most people tend to wanna be tribal like that for whatever reason.
As for "Do American fans always root against European Fighters"...I mean...have you not seen the crowds and support that Lomachenko and Golovkin have drawn in America? Often cheering loudly for them in their fights.

White folks in America do not follow boxing. Period. In fact, if you asked 50 folks who the heavyweight champion i would bet half would say “Mike Tyson” and the other half might say “that Russian guy” thinking of either Wlad or Vitali.
Floyd was pretty well known and some of them know Canelo. That’s about it.

I've heard an entire arena chanting "TRIPLE G! TRIPLE G! TRIPLE G!" in California more than once. That's not a majority?ValMar wrote: ↑08 Sep 2019, 08:48Thanks ! Re: Some questions for American fans ?
Nationalism in Latin American countries is generally more acute than in the USA, relative to sports, including in those communities in America.
Conservative white American does not equate to white nationalist / supremacist.
American boxing fans tend to be the least nationalistic / prejudiced, in my experience. That is why fighters come from all over the world to fight here. It is not just the $$$ (although that is always the primary factor).
Very few boxers move to Russia, Japan, China, Africa, or even the U.K. or Mexico to make it in boxing. The American boxing fans are largely color blind and apolitical.
Just ask Pac, Lomassiah, SMartinez, Gingerhead, Tyson Fury, Maidana, every successful Cuban, and on and on.

Re: Some questions for American fans ?
I bet you’ll find it a lot easier to go into a bar and talk about how Antonio Brown will work out for New England rather than whether or not Otto Wallin is a live underdog against Tyson Fury.gilgamesh wrote: ↑08 Sep 2019, 08:50I'm White Folk in AmericaContendeh wrote: ↑08 Sep 2019, 08:48 White folks in America do not follow boxing. Re: Some questions for American fans ?
I mean not really because when you flip it like that I'd be the guy who knows jack sh*t about Antonio Brown or the Patriots because I don't give a flying f*ck about Football
But I get your point, and yes Boxing fans are few and far between to run across.
Re: Some questions for American fans ?
I didn’t say you’d be good at talking about it, Gilg.
Just kidding, man. You get what I’m saying though.
Re: Some questions for American fans ?
Q. What about white conservative Americans ?
I'll tell you something interesting about that. Due to the 30 something year drought of no white HW champion I have very vivid memories of very liberal fans rooting for Quarry and Cooney.
In 1972 they were voting for George McGovern and protesting Vietnam and rooting for Quarry all simultaneously . Fast forward to 1980s, voting for Fritz Mondale or even Jesse Jackson and rooting for Gerry Cooney. I had a teacher who did a whole unit on MLK and after class he was talking up Jerry Quarry! So even the liberals were pro white hope.
Q. Do they support non-white American fighters ?
White Americans either loved or hated Ali. Most I knew, were big fans, but still likely to root for Quarry agains him at the time. Today, white American boxing fans are almost nonexistent. The few left just wanna watch good fighters.
Do American fans always root against European fighters ?
It depends. Many Americans, especially women, but many men, rooted for Lennox Lewis against Mike Tyson. Tyson had lost the women vote
with his statements and antics. The rape conviction, regardless of whether he was guilty, did not help.
The Mexican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican rivalries are fierce. Not sure how Niaraguans, Guatemalans, Costa Ricans root for.I think this has changed. Initially my buddies and I rooted for the Klitschkos because they were different. Big white guys who are good, how unique. But after a while in turned into a North America vs UK vs Eastern Europe. North Americans are more likely, I think, to root for a fighter form the UK than Eastern Europe at this point.

Re: Some questions for American fans ?
American fans cheer for anyone. There is no target group. Fighters like Duran and Manny were beloved. Now, white boxing fans are a small group, but that's my demographic and my favorite fighters have mostly been black and Hispanic. Favorite white fighter is probably Carl froch.

Erik Morales and James Toney were 2 of my favorites. Joe Frazier is probably my all time favorite Heavyweight to watch. Bobby Chacon. Maidana. Golovkin. Jose Luis Castillo. Julian Jackson. Saad Muhammad
Basically, aggressive dudes that wind up in scrappy fights where a KO ending is highly possible or likely
Re: Some questions for American fans ?
Opening this thread, I had not any bad intentions, simply I would like to know more about American boxing fans.
My only experience was more than twenty years ago, when I attended the course of English language, organized by the gruop of American Protestant Christians (the Pentacostals). BTW, I am not religious, but I am very interested about the religion, and I had enjoyed a lot, the month or two, I can not remember.
I am not conservative at all, and all of them were very conservative (God, Country, Family, etc, etc....), but they were very, very nice group of people (white, but without any trace of racism/chauvinism).
The week before Tyson-Holy 1, I had asked him which fighter they prefer (simply - will you root for Mike or for Evander ?).
All of them had laughed, I had thought that they laughed because of my bad English. After a minute or two, they answered : You are silly, Evander is "our brother, devoted Christian", of course we will root for him.

Re: Some questions for American fans ?
Holyfield is from Georgia and had a lot of fan support among black and white.
Wilder has some Alabama fan support, but as I said there are less boxing fans in the US, especially white boxing fans. Of course, Wilder's image is quite different as well, and these polite Protestants that you mentioned aren't likely to be cheerleading him too much.

I'm a white conservative that believes in God. Wilder is my second favorite heavy after Joshua.

But you are a very different kind of conservative than Valmar was describing. Those guys sound like they've had 2 drinks their entire life.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑08 Sep 2019, 09:56 I'm a white conservative that believes in God. Wilder is my second favorite heavy after Joshua.

Reminds me of some lines from Forrest Gump. I don't remember it exactly but it went something like, "That's Dallas from Cleveland, Cleveland is from Austin, and Austin is from Dallas."

When I read social media comment boards it does amaze me how many people think there is only type of liberal or only one type of conservative.
Some conservatives think all progressives are Antifa occupy Wall Street types OR they think they all live like Jeff Epstein.
Some liberals think all conservatives don't drink and listen to music OR are looking for a black church to bomb.
It's really amazing.
