Good grief! Oliver McCall fighting again - at 54!!
Re: Good grief! Oliver McCall fighting again - at 54!!
I noticed that he was still active
I nearly made a joke about him being a potential Fury opponent
But he might be too short...

He’s on the “I worked for Don King so now I have to work until I can’t be licensed anywhere anymore” retirement plan.

54 is too light for him.

The dumb get dumber with age. He's looking to shorten his life.
Re: Good grief! Oliver McCall fighting again - at 54!!
McCall fought Holmes in 95.
Holmes fought Ali in 80.
Ali fought Moore in 62.
Moore made is debut in 1935.
85 years linked by 4 fights!

McCall might seem to some to be past his expiration date. However, despite being age 54 with 73 pro fights, he's still NEVER been knocked out. Is he really more shot than a 31-year-old with 3 losses who's been KO'ed 3 times?

I remember he had a fight scheduled not long ago but it didn’t happen last minute. Can’t remember who it was against. Jamal James was it?

Re: Good grief! Oliver McCall fighting again - at 54!!
yeah it's hard to beat, but there are some impressive span between 3 fighters, this one is the biggest i've managed to find
Holmes Retired in 2002
Holmes fought Ali in 80
Ali fough Moore in 62
Moore made his debut in 1935
2002-1935=67 years
so Ali fought a guy who retired 67 years after the debut of one of the guys he fought too.

I attended the Oliver McCall vs John Hopoate fight in May 2009 (McCall won via TKO 2). That fight seems like it occurred eons ago! Anyway, McCall did go 6 rounds last November ... at 54 let's give him some props, the guys still an athlete.

Funny enough his kid hasn't fought since 2013.

People who licence him should be jailed.
Re: Good grief! Oliver McCall fighting again - at 54!!
He can still win fights at a certain level and probably would beat 85% of all current active heavyweights.
The ? would be do you cap the licence on AGE alone, if so, what age and some 40 year olds are fitter than 30 year olds. In principle I agree with you since the problem would be when Mr McCall engages a fight when he is paid well-thinks he can win- gets used as a 'name' - gets a beating

Dagilechia, I suppose you are still young. I am 54, and I know what it means. BTW, I am fit, without any extra weight.

Volenti non fit iniuria - to a willing person injury is not done. I think that even 80 years old should be allowed to fight if they want to. Its their life and their choice. The doctors should only inform them about the potential consequences.

In tennis, golf, football (soccer) etc. veteran athletes can compete in masters competitions against fellow middle-aged counterparts.
The sport of boxing, however, is bloody dangerous and over-the-hill fighters like Nigel Benn and Oliver McCall should be actively discouraged from competing.
That being said, if legislation cannot be effectively implemented to prevent middle-aged fighters from competing, there should at least be rules to ensure they’re only allowed to face opposition of a similar age and fitness levels. And perhaps additional medical precautions such be implemented to cater for such higher-risk bouts.

Are you suggesting that there should be no licencing at all?dagilechia wrote: ↑09 Sep 2019, 14:16Volenti non fit iniuria - to a willing person injury is not done.
