Callum Smith vs. John Ryder - 23 November 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Super-middleweight number one Callum Smith is set for a long-awaited return to action in an all-British mandatory clash with John Ryder.

The World Boxing Super Series inaugural winner had been hoping to land a huge fight against one of the current crop of pound for pound stars.

Failure to net a bigger fish has led to ‘Mundo’ accepting the World Boxing Association’s ruling on his next challenger.

WBN understands Smith v Ryder will now take place in late November. Potentially on the same night as Deontay Wilder v Luis Oritz (Nov 23).

A formal announcement could be made in the next week. It seems Smith wants to take care of title-holding duties before eyeing a homecoming bout in 2020.

Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium, a place Smith and his brothers Paul, Liam and Stephen regularly attend football matches, is being lined up for a massive event in the spring or summer of next year.

Potential opponents lined up are Billy Joe Saunders, Demetrius Andrade or Chris Eubank Jr.

Major players in Canelo or Gennadiy Golovkin could also be enticed if the price is right.

Callum is number 1 in the division. I would expect him to stop John. Don't get me excited this fight. Big fan of both. Respect gorllia big time great to see him in a world title fight and a London boy too.but Smith is to good for most . Also I don't think to most ordinary people outside boxing will sell

Riveting. I'm sure this matchup really excites Smith and will have him bending over backwards to stay with Matchroom.

The height difference here is going to be ridiculous.

Smith is one of the biggest 168ers I can think of ever at World title winning level and Ryder was short even when he was at middleweight.

Imagine Smith vs Canelo, it would look hilarious

Ya, I want the best fights for Smith, though TBF Ryder's been on a good run.

Smith should go up. Or he can go down to face Robert Easter Jr, who is almost his size.

I like this John Ryder, a boxer of a heart, yet his chance seems low, hope he can prove me wrong.

Well put.
It reaks of stay busy. Smith should be a lot more active. Nothing learned or gained from fighting John. He is so small a SMW, it really does not prepare Smith for any of the other top contenders.

Eddie Hearn for ya,thinks he is a great promotor but really is he? He has the biggest deal in tv with dazn and he has the monopoly with sky tv's money,he is a fortunate snake imho.

Not a great fight for the supposed division number 1.

Eddie doesn’t appear to have a lot of interest in Smith. Something just doesn’t seem quite right with the relationship.

Eddie has an uncanny ability , too seek out and recognise the guys who are popular with the public , the guys that when he goes on u tube to talk about them will get him the most hits, He has Smith , a big guy at his weight tall rangy , ackward , and boring , and he looks to sign BJS a guy who has put more time into being a fool and ducking good fights than most previous champs , but still a guy who gets u tube hits mostly for being an idiot

Its really a no brainer who he is gonna try to make into a star in the USA , , Billy the clown gets the u tube hits so Billy the clown it is , ,If Smith took to wearing a Rooster suit , and run around smacking prostitutes on the arse , whilst at the same time calling out Canelo has a chicken who's ass he's gonna smack , then he would find himself heavilly promoted by matchroom , and why simple , Essie would get the views on U tube and hence in his own mind make himself bigger than the boxer , and lets be under NO illusion it really is all about EDDIE

I like Ryder but I don't like his chances in this fight.

I still feel that he missed the boat a bit with the Lemieux fight falling through as he could have won that and made a name for himself in the US in doing so.

Smith needs to keep busy and this is a better fight than his last one imo. He needs a unification really but Hearn won't put up the money to bring the US guys over here.

Smith should probably sign with Haymon, an ITV PPV vs Eubank Jr followed by a unification vs Plant at Anfield would probably be his reward.

David Price is no longer interested in filling space on fight cards and taking part in contests in which he is the underdog. Those days are gone, at least for now. The Liverpool heavyweight has made it clear, and reaffirms below, that unless the money on offer is life-changing he will be focusing on matches he views as 50-50 or that he is the favourite going into.

Mmmmm ,, Dunno really am 50-50 on that one ,, He says unless i'm in a 60-40- ,, 70 -30 position to win , i don't want the fight , well i can understand , He's sort of saying i know i'm not the best , i know i'm not elite , so i want people i can beat , Now for most i would say eff off then why should we promote you ,,, But it is Price he has paid his dues , he has shown he's got the balls ect ,.... However i do struggle with how can ANY boxer refuse to fight unless they virtually are gauranteed a win , against lower calibre opponents , and then expect to get used, by promoters looking to put good even fights on , let alone get good money , , He's virtually sayig he wants life changing money to fight Dubois , Joyce to name two opponents , , but why should a promoter pay it , we know he himself, does'nt feel confident about beating them he just told us.

Hard one , especielly when he's one of the good guys in boxing , but boxing is the entertainment buisness , Canelo is a box office star , and a national treasure , he can pick and choose what movies he makes , cos he knows the world will turn out to watch him , , Price , well sorry he has'nt graduated from commercials yet .

For me like i said its a hard one , i'm 50-50 about it , but Price knows where he's at , he's been British and Commonwealth , champ , going back there is a backward step ,, but going forward if he himself feels he should'nt could'nt or will not take a fight unless its at least 60-40 in his favor , he will have to accept lower money or retire . After all who would pay good money to see Price knock a stiff over

To be fair to Ryder if you look at last 4 wins - only 18/24 months back you wouldn’t have given him a prayer of winning those.

You would need PPV to get those guys plus Smith’s money to stage that here - that’s the problem.

I felt he could beat both Cox and Neilson, I hadn't heard of the other two (though they both looked decent on paper).

As I said, I like Ryder and he is fully deserving of the shot, I just wish it was against someone else.
