I read today that Ol' Blue Eyes boxed under the name Marty O'Brien. I looked here and there was a Marty O'Brien from Hoboken, NJ. (1-1)
I am assuming that was who the author was talking about.
Marty O'Brien = Frank Sinatra
Yeah, it was Frank's daddy that had a few bouts under that name. There was a large number Irish fans in hoboken at that time so that's whjy he cose the Irish moniker.
Francis Albert did have a connection with boxing though, in addition to being a life long fan He was a close friend and part backer of Tami Mauriello, a hard punching light heavy and heavy weight who knocked Joe Louis allthe way across the ring with a right hand and had him hanging on the ropes, but Louis came back and flattened him... all in the first round. After the fight, in the post fight interview Tami said, "I just got to goddam careless" which shocked listeners and caused fuss because even thewords hell and damn were banned from radio at that time.

I have an old collection of radio boxing stuff on an lp and the "goddam" is blipped out.
i also have this fight on film although I have read several times that it doesn't exist. Silent film...well edited...viewed from three different angles. Does anyone know if it's available on tape?
I posted someplace elsewhere that Sinatra had mixed feelings about this fight as he was a great admirer of Joe Louis, so as they exhanged punches he's yell..."Get him Tami.....Joe..throw the left hook....etc."
