Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
Stephen "Breadman" Edwards: “I think Kovalev has some vulnerability. I think he shows his discomfort in the ring when hurt or fatigued. But he’s not a total front runner. He’s just not Marvin Hagler sturdy or Saad Muhammad resilient. But he has some bottom side character.
“When this fight was 1st proposed my guts told me Canelo wins. After watching the McGirt and Kovalev chemistry I’m a little hesitant but I still pick Canelo.
“I think a fighter who can actually eat high calories and fight at his walk around weight has some advantages. Kovalev does not make 175 easy. I remember a few years back they talked about him moving to Cruiserweight.
“I also believe Kovalev’s reaction time will come into play. Canelo is moving around less mass. So Canelo will have an advantage as far as Kovalev being able to time his attack. He will have the same advantage Wilder has with BIG heavyweights. The same advantage Pacman has had since 2008. They simply can’t time him. Canelo will have a harder time with a smaller, faster fighter. Just like James Toney did.
“Call me crazy but I think Canelo will be able to JAB with Kovalev. And I think he can clip him in the mid-range once Krusher gets fatigued. They both have stamina issues, but Canelo is the more relaxed fighter with better defence. Kovalev does not counter-punch, he doesn’t have great block or parry skills and he doesn’t have great head movement. His defence is to move his feet out of his opponent’s punching range. Watch him close. The reason he looks bad when fatigued is because of this. So Canelo will be the more functional fighter as fatigue sets in.”

Are any 'experts' picking Kov? Do they pretty much all expect a wipeout?
Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
That breadman edwards quote seems reasonable.

Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
Ya it does, though defo disagree that Kov doesn't counterpunch (timing is a strength), and also he talks up a lack of size as being more of an advantage than it is IMO.
Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
Haha yes he does. Interesting though. Interesting fight. Looking forwRd to it.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑23 Sep 2019, 18:33 Ya it does, though defo disagree that Kov doesn't counterpunch (timing is a strength), and also he talks up a lack of size as being more of an advantage than it is IMO.

Like my son says, "very carefully". Canelo must be very careful, especially in the first half or judges will have no way to help him.

How much reach disadvantage does Canelo have, 4 inches or more? Plus Kovalev's jab is better.

I'm not ready to make a pick in this one yet, but if Canelo does win it will be depend on his body shots slowing down Kovalev (though not necessarily stopping him).

If the judging in Canelo bouts was consistent I'd go for Kov points

Like I said, that is only one measurement. Its not like Kovalev is taller than Jacobs. Body shots will win this fight for Canelo. If this was the pre-Ward Kovalev and not the downhill 36 or 37 yr old Kovalev with less confidence guy, it would be a 50-50 fight. I see it as a 75-25 in favor of Canelo. Not one to bet on if you are a Kovalev fan, in my opinion.

If you think Canelo's even with prime Kov, do you think Canelo would beat Berterbiev, Bivol, Gvozdyk, etc? The other champs..Bandog wrote: ↑24 Sep 2019, 07:53boxing_rocks wrote: ↑23 Sep 2019, 21:51

Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
It's about style. Kovalev lacks an inside and midrange game that those guys may have. Canelo struggles more with speed and movement than anything else and Kovalev isn't that fast compared to the likes of a Mayweather or even Lara. And prime Kovalev wasn't as tough as prime GGG.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑24 Sep 2019, 08:12If you think Canelo's even with prime Kov, do you think Canelo would beat Berterbiev, Bivol, Gvozdyk, etc? Bivol and Gvo are both outside, straight punch fighters too. Bert is crude and open and vulnerable even vs C+ level. It's strange to me how mant people are confident people of Canelo over Kov but then won't even address Canelo vs other LHW.

People are far more likely to ponder the outcome of fights that have actually been made and will happen, as opposed to bouts that probably won’t take place.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑24 Sep 2019, 09:45It's strange to me how mant people are confident people of Canelo over Kov but then won't even address Canelo vs other LHW.
There’s nothing strange about that.

Nah, I'll specifically ask them and then they'll dodge or do a dance around it

Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
And I mean, if this kid is that much of a beast to take Kov apart, that deserves mad props. If people act like Kov's way more shot than he is nelo won't get the respect he deserves, but so many are acting like he's cherry picked an easy mark and is bound to win because of that
At least, if Kov wins it will be a decent upset at the current odds and the posted 'expert picks' which are both favouring Nelo

Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
easy one to answer, he's going to rip his body.
Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
I think Canelo is ahead in terms of skill. I've never been overly impressed with Kovalev. He's been a good champ but was kind of exposed by Ward. Now at his age he shows fatigue in addition to being weak to the body. I could be wrong, and hope so because I can't stand the diva drug cheat Canelo.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑24 Sep 2019, 08:12If you think Canelo's even with prime Kov, do you think Canelo would beat Berterbiev, Bivol, Gvozdyk, etc? Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
Only if the fight goes to the final bell. Canelo will be awarded another robbery win then. He lost to Golovkin twice. He was outjabbed in the 2nd fight. Kovalev is a better outfighter, than Golovkin. This will be a key for Kovalev in breaking Canelo down.

Re: How will Canelo beat Kovalev ?
Kov is a decent counter puncher when he's in ring centre and he can trigger opponents with feints/ half step back and counter when they fall short, not so much once they're into mid range or closer, or if he can't move his feet.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑23 Sep 2019, 18:33 Ya it does, though defo disagree that Kov doesn't counterpunch (timing is a strength), and also he talks up a lack of size as being more of an advantage than it is IMO.

Canelo just needs to went the distance to get the decision, and that is what he is going to do most of the time in this fight. He will attack mostly in the last 30, especially last 10 seconds to ''get the nod''.

Yeah I'm completely new to the sport, is this going to be an 8 round fight I'm a little unsure
Are they allowed to throw punches at the same time too or does one of them have to wait until the other is finished ?
Thanks in advance for your help
