Post by dagilechia »

what were the worst looking injuries that you have ever seen in boxing? I was thinking about that after Fury vs Wallin

some of the worst i can think of are:

Denis Lebedev vs Guillermo Jones

That 1st picture you posted. You KNOW it's bad when even Don King looks to have genuine concern for you. Usually that motherf*cker don't seem to care about anybody, but the look on his face there is definitely a sympathetic one.

Yes it is.

He beat him with significantly less difficulty in the rematch.

ha, yeah, i didn't noticed that, i was shocked that Lebedev continued to fight, Jones looked like a HW, i was even more shocked when it was revealed that Jones was cheating... He should have never been allowed to a boxing ring again after causing such a damage on Lebedev's face while he was cheating.

Surely the worst injuries in boxing aren't the superficially gruesome ones, where there’s swelling or blood pouring from fighters’ faces, instead it almost certainly has to be incidents that led to fatalities or have life-long life-changing consequences? :o

Lujan vs Margarito is a good call. It must be a very rare injury. Margarito himself had some huge swellings on his eyes in some of fights too.

Of course, you’re point is clear, but still… if a fighter doesn’t look like he’s going to wake-up from a KO… that’s some scary shḯt to watch! :o

I thought the same. It's downright chilling to watch Benn/McClellen

A big gaping gushy open wound to me looks visually and instinctively worse than an internal injury I can't see tbh

True, but the thread brought some other thoughts. I'm not faulting it, just commenting. Truly the worst injuries resulted in death or lifetime impairment. But we do like to look at grotesque appearances, don't we. I remember watching the Rahman Holyfield injury in slow motion to see if I could notice the swelling actually happen.

Probably won’t make the top of the worst looking but Tommy Hearns Barkley 2 comes to mind. I remember seeing hearns face after and it looked ironed in. Similar to Voldemort, er sorry, he who must not me named, in Harry Potter with a flat, swollen nose. Hard to find a picture though, clearer in the video. Hearns face took a relentless beating that night.

You see the knot on Rahman's head instantly after the headbutt.

Yup. Not even slow motion showed it grow. It wasn't there and then it was. Thought it was going to burst and spew gunk all over the ring.

It wasn't that huge straight away, but it appeared instantly, and it was at least the size of a quarter from the off.

Back in the early 1980s I remember the bout involving Billy Collins Jr and Luis Resto. Collins' face around both eyes was very messed up and there was some issue raised about the Resto's gloves and hand wraps. If you Google Resto-Collins the picture of the kid's face will pop up and it is pretty graphic - sorry I am not computer savvy enough to figure out how to post the picture here. The outcome of this bout always bothered me. Collin's Father (who was a very tough fighter in his day) knew something was wrong and at the end of the fight ran across the ring to try and grab and check Resto's gloves. I can't remember if any formal investigation took place but the Collins kid was never the same after this bout. I think some kinda investigative report aired on TV years later about it.
