His power was never better than average IMO. He was defo a bigger hitter at lower weights, but people exaggerate by calling him a boxer puncher or saying he had good power. He would still usually win decisions or have to beat guys down with loads of clean connects to stop them. But since he was so accurate and sharp, he could do damage anyway despite not being a big hitter.

I don't know about has it all. He definitely has an amazing Ring IQ and ability to stay calm under pressure.

I never saw him throw a particularly good uppercut.

Where is defence in this list or is that too general?

That probably comes with brain. Because those that slug all the time clearly have no brain. All that damage.

It most definitely was
You'd rate Hearns/Jackson/Haye/Wilder/whoever's right hand as better in isolation, but Trinidad's flew under the radar of his left. A bit like a jab in reverse, I just loved how he peppered with it so fluidly and pulled it straight back.

I think Tyson had the greatest left to the body in terms of pure techique. His explosive upper and lower body coordination was amazing out of a coil. Didn't throw it that much in fights, though.

Toughness could be added alongside chin for the likes of Frazier. For defence I'd vote Whitaker, although I think Locche was the best at old-manning on the backfoot. He could go 50% longer than younger guys 'cause he used half their energy.

Intelligent use of energy was always one of Hopkins' strong suits too.

Being confident in your defense plays a big part in that.

Yeah, the young Khan was superfit but unravelled with his nervous energy loss. Toney's another Hopkins on that score.

Toney didn't like UFC because he was made to work, but we know from Couture that the same thing applies with experience in it.

Being calm and poised goes a long way. You've seen a lot of fighters who were clearly in tip top shape from an athletic standpoint who had stamina issues because they wasted too much movement.

Jermain Taylor comes to mind. Pascal too.

I'm still not sure if it's more mental than physical with Price. That's a helluva weight to carry around, so maybe we've been unfair on him.

I think Wilder has broken the could of what we expect an HW to look like, just like Bolt did with sprinters.

Yes, he does lack the skill, but ascetically, he is pretty much perfect for an 'athlete' in the sport of not giving your opponent a physical edge.

He's tall & long armed, and carries no dead weight, and is loaded with fast twitch fibres. This gives him explosive speed & power, and the physical edge that will buy him the extra seconds over the attribute of 'skill'.

This is similar to how, for example, Reheem Sterling is not the most skilful footballer, but his athleticism buys him that half a seconds to make the correction. Our England team is pretty much built on athletes now.

Is Wilder a one off? Or will we see more athletes 'winging it' at the top level?

Supposing he had, do you think he would've been physically and mentally suited to long stretches of grappling? If he'd been good enough to do lots of stalling, I guess.

In response to Mayweather has it all. He has a good ring IQ, good defense. good straight right...I don't recall him busting out an uppercut too often.

That’s the first clip I could find on YouTube, I know that’s not concrete proof, but he used to throw a right uppercut after shoulder rolling an incoming straight right all night. It might be his best punch. I think he had a brilliant uppercut.

ED; I know that’s Moseley and he’s a southpaw in that vid. But usually he’d counter an orthodox straight right
