Chad Dawson vs. Denis Grachev - October 11, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Press Release

Less than four months removed from his highly-anticipated return to professional boxing, former two-time world champion and pound-for-pound king “Bad” Chad Dawson steps back into the ring for yet another shot at championship glory.

Dawson (35-9, 19 KOs) returns to his home state Friday, October 11, 2019 to headline the first event of CES Boxing’s UFC FIGHT PASS® winter tripleheader at the Connecticut Convention Center. The New Haven, CT, resident faces hard-hitting Russian challenger Denis Grachev (19-8-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant WBC USNBC Light Heavyweight Title in the eight-round main event.

Starring in the co-feature, unbeaten New London, CT, heavyweight Cassius Chaney (16-0, 10 KOs) battles former world champion and Colombian veteran Santander Silgado (28-7, 22 KOs) in an eight-round bout co-promoted by CES Boxing and Main Events.

Tickets for the event start at $47 and are available online at www.cesboxing.com, www.ctconventions.comand www.showclix.com, or by phone at 401-724-2253. Doors open at 6 p.m. ET with the first preliminary bout beginning at 7. The UFC FIGHT PASS® live stream kicks off at 9 with the broadcast team of CES Boxing publicist and matchmaker Michael Parente and former light heavyweight contender George Foreman III. Start your free trail or purchase a UFC FIGHT PASS® subscription at www.ufcfightpass.com.

The October 11 event is the first of three by CES Boxing to close out 2019. The promotion returns to UFC FIGHT PASS® November 23 and concludes its tripleheader with a special December 7 matinee.

Dawson’s returns adds another layer of suspense to a stacked fight card featuring the region’s top talent. The former WBC and IBF world title-holder ended a two and a half-year layoff in June with a unanimous decision win over Quinton Rankin and now faces the always-exciting Grachev, a Chaykovsky, Russia native who now lives and trains in San Diego and has won three of his last four bouts. While Dawson carries a firm legacy into the October 11 battle, Grachev is well-known in New England, having fought for CES Boxing in 2011 and scoring a knocking win over then unbeaten Rhode Island prospect Vladine Biosse.

Dawson’s resume in the light heavyweight division is unmatched, and his history with CES Boxing dates back to the beginning of his career, including his second pro fight when he shared the stage with Rhode Island icon Vinny Paz, who recorded his 48th victory that night. Two years later, the hard-hitting Dawson reached a major milestone of his own, capturing the WBC World Youth Middleweight Title with a win over Dumont Welliver.

Dawson’s rise to prominence continued with NABO and NABF titles in 2005 and 2006, respectively, before he defeated Tomasz Adamek for the WBC World Light Heavyweight Title. Dawson defended the belt three times over the next year and a half, including a win over two-time world champion Glen Johnson. Six months later, he dominated three-time champ Antonio Tarver in the first of their two championship bouts, winning and subsequently defending the IBO and IFO world titles. In 2009, he returned to Connecticut and beat Johnson a second time to capture the interim WBC title and then won the WBC light heavyweight crown a second time in 2012 with a majority-decision victory over Bernard Hopkins in Atlantic City.

Like Dawson, Chaney faces a tall order in the co-main event. The 32-year-old heavyweight returns for the first time since July following a highlight-reel knockout win over Joel Caudle on ESPN+. Silgado once again steps to the table against elite competition, having faced opponents with a combined record of 77-4 in his last three bouts.

Also returning to the ring, New Haven super welterweight Jimmy Williams (16-3-1, 5 KOs) faces Tilton, NH, veteran Jose Medina (18-17-1, 7 KOs) in an intriguing six-round all-New England showdown while up-and-comer Sharad Collier (2-0-1, 2 KOs) of Hartford battles Ohio’s Glenn Mitchell (3-3, 3 KOs) in a six-round lightweight bout.

The undercard also features two undefeated Connecticut prospects making their firster appearance in Hartford in separate four-round bouts. Super bantamweight Nathan Martinez (5-0, 2 KOs) of New Britain faces Steve Garagarza (1-1-1, 1 KO) of Laredo, TX, and featherweight Jacob Marrero (4-0, 3 KOs) puts his perfect record on the line against Huntington, WV, vet Marcus Coney (2-2-1, 1 KO).

Super welterweight Jalen Renaud (1-0) of Springfield, MA, makes his promotional debut in a four-round intrastate showdown against Roxbury’s Maceo Crowder (2-2, 1 KO); former New York Golden Gloves champion Jahvel Joseph (0-0) of the Bronx makes his professional debut in a four-round bout against Leandro Silva (1-2) of Boca Raton, FL, and New Haven super lightweight Carlos Perez Ojeda (0-0) also debuts in a four-round bout against an opponent to be determined.

If the same version of Chad Dawson (from his last fight) shows up, Grachev will win.

That 35-9 record had me confused. I was wondering how many Dawson’s losses I had missed. Then I I looked up and he’s still at 5 losses

Grachev Will Aim To Put Chad Dawson to Sleep in Looming Clash

More than 11 years have passed since promoter Jimmy Burchfield brought live championship boxing to the Connecticut Convention Center. The drought ends Friday with one of the state’s most successful fighters looking to add another title to his collection.

CES Boxing hosts its first event at the Convention Center since 2008 on Friday night live on UFC Fight Pass® with former two-time world champion “Bad” Chad Dawson of New Haven facing hard-hitting Russian challenger Denis Grachev (19-8-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant WBC USNBC Light Heavyweight Title in the eight-round main event.

"It’s a pleasure for me to be fighting for another title in front of my friends, family and supporters. I’ve trained hard to make sure I’m 100-percent ready for the task at hand. I’m looking forward to putting on a great show on October 11. Thanks to Mr. [Burchfield] for putting such a great show together. It’s great to be back home where it all started,” Dawson said.

The card features nine action-packed fights, an eclectic mix of longtime fight veterans and young up-and-comers, some of whom will have the opportunity to showcase their skills on the world’s largest streaming platform. The fight week festivities kick off today with a special pre-fight press conference at 5 p.m. at Armazem Fusion Fitness, 45 NE Industrial Rd., Branford, CT 06405. The press conference is free and open to the public.

Bringing boxing to UFC Fight Pass® was only a matter of time for CES Boxing, whose MMA division debuted with the streaming platform in January. Dawson’s return to the ring headlines the promotion’s first event in Hartford since fellow Connecticut boxer Matt Remillard captured the WBC Youth World Featherweight Title with a win over Jose Megallon.

“I’ve fought world-class opponents before, so being in the ring with a guy like Chad Dawson is nothing new to me. I’ve been working hard with my team in San Diego to bring the belt back to the west coast. I hope Chad Dawson is as ready as I am. The fans will enjoy this fight," Grachev said.

Dawson last fought in Hartford in November of 2009 when he defended his WBC and IBO light heavyweight titles against Glen Johnson. Friday is his just his second appearance at the Connecticut Convention Center; his first also happened to be his first world title defense, a knockout victory over Jesus Ruiz in 2007 to retain the WBC championship.

It's news to me that Silgado is a former world champion. These press releases really have no shame do they.

Grachev hasn't won outside Mexico in almost 7 years :o

How many years ago was that? I imagine around the time Dawson was a p4p player. Agreed it could be a tough fight, Chad is shot, but not because of what grachev did a decade ago against a guy well below Dawson's level at the time.

CES Boxing’s first UFC Fight Pass card is here. - https://www.badlefthook.com/2019/10/11/ ... fight-pass

Tonight at 9 pm ET streaming live on UFC Fight Pass, CES Boxing presents former light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson against Denis Grachev in the main event from Hartford, Connecticut.

Dawson, now 37, has been sort of in and out of boxing for several years now, following back-to-back stoppage losses to Andre Ward and Adonis Stevenson in 2012-13. He lost to Tommy Karpency in 2014 and Andrzej Fonfara in 2017, and returned after over two years inactive in June, beating Quinton Rankin by decision in an eight-rounder.

Tonight’s fight with the 37-year-old Russian Grachev is also scheduled for eight rounds. Grachev gave Lucian Bute a tougher than expected fight in 2012, but that and a win over Zsolt Erdei in 2013 were the peak of his boxing career. He’s 6-7 since then and hasn’t beaten anyone good.

The show tonight will also feature heavyweight Cassius Chaney, an unbeaten 32-year-old, against veteran Santander Silgado, plus more.

Main Card (UFC Fight Pass, 9:00 pm ET)

• Chad Dawson (35-5, 19 KO) vs Denis Grachev (19-8-1, 10 KO), light heavyweights, 8 rounds

• Cassius Chaney (16-0, 10 KO) vs Santander Silgado (28-7, 22 KO), heavyweights, 8 rounds

• Jimmy Williams (16-3-1, 5 KO) vs Jose Medina (18-17-1, 7 KO), junior middleweights, 6 rounds

• Sharad Collier (2-0-1, 2 KO) vs Glenn Mitchell (3-3, 3 KO), lightweights, 4 rounds

• Nathan Martinez (5-0, 2 KO) vs Steve Garagarza (1-1-1, 1 KO), featherweights, 4 rounds

Grachev gets to re-live his prime and Dawson doesn't? Damn, that bad decision to shed weight n fight at 168 is still costing him.

Dawson won a unanimous decision, as judges Ken Ezzo (80-72), Glenn Feldman (79-73) and Don Trella (80-72) all had the southpaw ahead by wide distances.

“I felt good,” Dawson said. “After each fight, you look for something different to do, something to work on. I seen a lot of stuff I need to work on, you know, back to the drawing board. Whatever’s next, I’m ready for. This [regional] belt right here is just one step closer to achieving my ultimate dream, which is winning another world title before I go. I’m 37 years old. I feel like I’m 25, so hey, I’m ready for any of the guys at the top. Any of ‘em want me, wanna come test me, the better the competition, the better I’m gonna perform, so there you go.”

Ha ha! That's a really snarky piece of editing somebody did there. Like "this [meaningless] win really means a lot to me."

Cassius is getting matched like they think he's trash

Chad has really nice punch form and smooth moments. Very 'correct'. Obviously physically he is well faded though and his chin aint anything. Still probably has a nice enough name to get used as a record builder though.

Denis Grachev is best oponent Chad can defeat at this point. Decent victory, time to retire. If he wanna try his luck, rematch with Pascal can bring solid money and attention. Still, big risk for his health, Bad Chad is faded af.
