WBC VOWS TO BAN PRO BOXERS FIGHTING IN THE OLYMPICS

Post by Best Coast »

Looks like the WBC will act upon its previously stated opposition to pro boxers fighting in Olympics or other amateur competitions by banning such fighters for 2 years.

“The WBC strongly disagrees with supporting a professional boxer competing in the Olympic Games,” says WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman after the Mexican Boxing Federation (FMB) and the National Boxing Commission (Conabox) invited world champions to compete in the boxing qualifying process for the next Olympic Games.

“It’s something unacceptable that should not be accepted by fans and boxing experts in the world. Olympic amateur boxing is completely different. They are two different sports and it is very dangerous. We cannot accept this. If any professional boxer, including champions or former champions, decide to participate in the next Olympics, they will have a sanction of at least two years in the WBC.”

Previously, the WBC had expressed its opposition to the process in Rio 2016 when some professional boxers including former world champions decided to try to participate but this time they have emphasized that for the Tokyo Olympics the professionals who participate will be banned from the WBC at least by two years.

The pros all got beat I think in their first fight at the Olympics in Rio. They have to box at a higher weight than they do for the pro fights since they have to make weight the morning of the bouts plus if they win, they have to continue making weight everyday they box. Top amateurs can compete with pros in a 3 round fight. They spar with them all the time.

I commend the WBC for this.

Pros should not be in the Olympics in ANY sport.

What about all the pro sprinters, swimmer's, field athletes etc.. With no pro athletes it would be like watching a local schools sports day :bag:

Or it should be every sport.

I don't understand why the standards are different for some Olympic sports. Some are THE BEST IN THE WORLD at this particular event. We get amateurs.

I'd think there are a lot more Pros than Amateurs in the Olympics in general. That being said, for Boxing it's usually been better for Amateurs to break out this way as it makes a star out of you.

Tennis, Golf, Soccer (football) etc.?

Most amateurs that compete in the Olympics are receiving payment via sponsorship anyway (i.e. Usain Bolt).

Tennis, golf and football don't belong in the Olympics in my opinion.
