I liked it as well mate, wouldn't be my GOAT but my old mans a bit of a casual, only seen it once it was one sided as far as scoring might be concerned maybe but Palomino gave a great effort

It was 9-1 with nonstop skill and action. Definitely not goat definitely not ok.

Meh. I was a big Duran fan and enjoyed watching it because Duran did great against a really good WW. Didn't think the fight had 'moments' like Holmes/Weaver. To each their own.

Watched Berbick-Ali.

The ref Zack Clayton, who was also the 3rd man in the ring in Zaire, helped Ali a lot. He broke the action constantly when Ali was in trouble. He was basically coaching Ali throughout the bout. I had forgotten about that.

764 times to be exact. Watched it because I just finished a book called Ali's Last Fight. I'm not a sadistic Ali hater.

I watched it last night for the first time since the 1980s. Perhaps my 2nd or 3rd watch.

Frank Bruno vs Joe Bugner



Bruno stops Bugner in the 8th of a non title Heavyweight bout, one sided domination from Bruno who was just too sharp and fresh for the ageing Bugner who did try to old man Bruno early, coming in dangerous with the head and spoiling Bruno but Bruno kept his composure and got to work behind an excellent jab and that was the shot which won him the fight really, it took Bugner apart round after round

Bugner never really looked like being stopped, he's a durable guy and Bruno was content to box him but after hurting him with a right hand in the 8th Bruno went in for the kill, Bugner was practically squatting against the bottom rope but wouldn't go down, Bruno was a bit naughty punching down on the top of his head and basically shoved him to the canvas for a count, Bugner got up but Bruno steamed right in there throwing leather when the towel come in

A decent effort by old Joe I thought.....he hung with Bruno for a good while and Frank looked tense/frustrated at times.

The fight always prompts the inevitable question as to what even a slightly younger-fresher Bugner with a bit more mobility and able to pump the jab more often would have achieved. There are a few rounds in the fight where even a visibly tiring Bugner still gets clean through with the jab and Frank is not liking it ...…..interesting.

I am fairly sure Joe's training regime was not exactly 'spartan' and he might have had financial worries that needed clearing with a huge pay cheque.....he certainly did his full part in selling the fight and playing the "Aussie" villain to perfection

Frank Bruno vs Carl Williams



Bruno stops Williams in the 10th and final round of a non title fight, not a great fight as Williams never made things competitive enough, he did get up on his toes, trying to use his height and reach flicking out the jab but he was more of a nuisance than anything else, Bruno kept things simple using the jab and following it up with either and right hand or a left hook, not much to write home about

Bruno started to get to Williams in the 8th, wobbling him with a left hook and unloading on him in the following round, in the 10th finally Bruno got home with the shot he'd been looking for, big right hand over the top dropped Williams and the ref waved it off, might have been a tad harsh to not let him try to carry on but he was never in the fight really

Frank Bruno vs Carl Williams

The Williams fight was typically a bit oversold with Carl being presented as a very tricky obstacle for Frank...…..despite the fact that The Truth was essentially on the B-Side by then.

I seem to recall Williams being a great American salesman as well...…promising us all that Bruno had made a colossal mistake and he was in for a proper schooling.

The win over Williams did little to convince people that Frank warranted a title fight with Lennox Lewis or would be competitive...…but Frank had other plans and eventually had his night of nights against McCall.

Hector Camacho vs Rafael Limon



Camacho stops Limon in 5 to become World Super Featherweight champion, a bit of a rout for Camacho who was just too quick and fresh for Limon who just couldn't deal with the lightening speed of the younger Camacho, Limon was peppered with jabs, hooks and uppercuts all night along with the movement Limon just couldn't get out of the way of the punches, Camacho had him down right at the end of the 3rd with a looping left hand

Camacho ended things in the 5th creasing Limon with a body shot to put him down for a count then trapping him on the ropes before sending him down again with volume, Limon again got up but when Camacho had him trapped again launching an attack with both hands the ref stepped in to save Limon

Frank Bruno vs James Tillis



Bruno stops Tillis in the 5th round of a non title Heavyweight fight, well Tillis quit basically after a short attack from Bruno, surprising to see as Tillis usually durable and was well in the fight, neither guy was dominating, Bruno probably shaded the 1st and 4th and Tillis the 2nd and 3rd so it was all to play for, Bruno was struggling to get his punches off at times and Tillis was outboxing him for spells but out of nowhere in the 5th Bruno rocked Tillis with a right hand when Tillis went reeling into the corner where Bruno teed off rights on him, some which looked partially blocked, still when Tillis freed himself out of the corner he signalled to the ref he was done, I'm always careful about calling quit jobs but this was one from Tillis, slightest bit of trouble and he wanted no part of Bruno

I always got the impression that Bruno was overly nervous in this fight due to it being the first fight since the Witherspoon loss and that Mike Tyson was ringside watching on.

If you weren't thinking about Ali's poor health, it was a fairly entertaining fight.

I only watched it because I just finished a book on Ali's last fight. Of course he should have retired way before then.

I always got the impression that Bruno was overly nervous in this fight due to it being the first fight since the Witherspoon loss and that Mike Tyson was ringside watching on.

Think Frank had also sparred Tillis and spent a fair amount of time in a US training camp with him a while earlier.....when Tillis was still pretty handy and not so shop-worn. So he was right to be a tad wary.

Not in its entirety as I posted eariler. It was too disturbing for me. Ugly scene.
