Re: Boxing Life Stories - I'm calling it now
Have finally got round to listening to the two Towers podcasts.
I went in expecting to enjoy his story, and appreciate the challenges he has faced, but I found it quite harrowing and struggled to like the man.
There is a lot to like, and he is doing more good things than I have ever done helping others, but he is a danger to the public with his stories of violence. Taking his story at face value, he beat up a man who bumped into his car. That is horrific given he isnt just a average man not knowing how to punch. You can only assume he didn't tell the police because he was scared, or something wasnt explained fully on the podcast.
I just didnt get the feeling he had remorse for his actions to innocents (less bothered about people who engage in that environment). I also think he was quite arrogant in that he had such a high view of his views and teachings to others.
We come from very different worlds, so it is probably unfair to compare our morals and methods. His upbringing and life story is a much tougher experience than I will ever see, and I do respect his openness about it all.
They are great podcasts, and it was an interesting listen.

I know...imagine having a little ding in your car and Richard Towers gets out of the other one in a rageadamwillan wrote: ↑05 Oct 2019, 06:14 Have finally got round to listening to the two Towers podcasts.

i agree, these have been the ones i havent enjoyed out of the whole series mainly because they are not really about boxing. the rest of them are absolutely brilliant, but hearing about criminals bores me.adamwillan wrote: ↑05 Oct 2019, 06:14 Have finally got round to listening to the two Towers podcasts.

Re: Boxing Life Stories - I'm calling it now
I didn't enjoy the Towers podcast either and actually stopped listening at the point where he said he'd "softended up Vladimir Klitschko" for Tyson Fury to beat. Nonsense. Sparring is sparring and if Towers had ever boxed Vlad for real the bout would end very quickly.
Up until that point there just wasn't enough "boxing" content.

Agree. I was expecting to hear about someone who had sorted himself out and shown remorse but he still seems volatile to say the least and seemed to relish describing what he had done to people. Decided to listen to part 2 to see if i had got the wrong end of the stick but turned off after a bit, was like listening to one of those crim books "...then I smashed his face in.." etc etc.adamwillan wrote: ↑05 Oct 2019, 06:14 Have finally got round to listening to the two Towers podcasts.

Listened to Kevin Mitchell podcast today. Much better than the Towers one, but a bit depressing.
Ok, he clearly had a ton of problems outside of the ring, but there were a fair few highs in his career they could have celebrated more rather than defaulting to the doom and gloom.

To be fair, I felt Tris was trying to bring out some of the highs but Kevin kept bringing up boozing etc.THEBUTCH wrote: ↑06 Oct 2019, 15:55 Listened to Kevin Mitchell podcast today. Much better than the Towers one, but a bit depressing.

The Robert Smith (BBBofB) interview is fantastic. I was hooked from the first minute to the last.
Tris and Robert are real boxing people and got into some contentious issues.
Absolutely absorbing and anyone who has a serious or passing interest in British boxing should listen.

Kevin Mitchell is one of those guys who people would keep picking to win no matter how many times he failed to do it stepping up. David Price I think was favourite in all his fights till his 5th loss!

Mitchell needs to grow up.
I've listened to all of the Tris Dixon podcasts. With the exception of the Towers pods which were just a little bit too gratuitous for my liking, I think they've been fantastic.

Egghead Kev strikes me as have the intellect of a 13 year old tbh
Re: Boxing Life Stories - I'm calling it now
The best Boxing podcast out there. His season 2 is out now.
Re: Boxing Life Stories - I'm calling it now
Bones Adams has an excuse for everything (which Dixon calls him out on), loved the way Bruce Trampler started his by saying 'cut the BS' when Dixon tried to introduce him, knew was in for a good one then! Robert Smith is fascinating, Gamache ..only really knew him from the Gatti KO so this was great background. leroy caldwell, some of his stories sounded fake but there were a couple of high points. looking forward to what comes next.

Just listened to the Jemel Herring one, what an absolutely sound geezer, so positive and comes across as a really nice fella.
Re: Boxing Life Stories - I'm calling it now
The Towers one is good for a laugh, I don't believe half of what he said.
Conveniently claiming he won every street fight he was in no matter how many people outnumbered him and what weapons they had, saying he was on numerous attempted murder charges but somehow got off with them all, saying he got the better of Wladimir Klitschko in sparring, saying he tried to shoot his dad but the gun jammed, and so on... haha.

Just done both parts to the Towers one. Outstanding stuff from Tris, and pretty entertaining story Richard has. Little bit of poetic license from the big fella no doubt but still entertaining nonetheless.
Something I took from his story though is he kept saying he is not a coward or a bully etc, but some of his stories made him sound out to be a massive bully! ( fan bumping fists with him at boxing shows so he banged him out/someone shunted his motor so he dragged him out the car and gave him a good hiding etc )
I’ve got the Jimmy Tibbs one up next and Calzaghe to follow. Looking forward to getting stuck in to them

Jane Couch was brilliant, Colin Hart told so many great stories that connected to an era long since past.
The Towers one was a good listen but only needed the one part for my tastes. Can only take so much of that gangster stuff. Plus, in one sentence he's a changed man and in the next he's talking about having a straightener on a car park with a fella a week or so beforehand. Hmm ok.

Colin McMillan Pod is available now.
Can't wait to listen to this one. I rated Colin from the moment I first saw him (against Alric Johnson at Crystal Palace). So fast and skillful.
Spoke to him at a show recently and still a great guy. If only there were more Colin McMillans in boxing.

Anyone who believes Richard Towers' stories to be truthful and not exaggerated probably still thinks the WWE is real

I don’t know a lot about awards for pods but these definitely deserve to win, think they are light years above anything else on the market. Just wish there was one a day right now.

He’s a big tall strong guy but he can’t really fight. I agree he’s a violent fantasist who doesn’t really deserve his podcast he’s in far better company than he merits. Guys like him are ten a penny in the jail, he’s just a lot bigger than most so he stands out.Szaman wrote: ↑07 Nov 2019, 17:21 The Towers one is good for a laugh, I don't believe half of what he said.

Towers claims to have "softened up" Vlad for Tyson Fury. What a bullsh1tter
