Light heavyweight Joe Ward, a 2016 Irish Olympian who signed with promoters Lou DiBella and Murphys Boxing with fanfare, had an extremely disappointing professional debut. He lost by second-round knockout to Marco Delgado (6-1, 5 KOs), 28, of Anaheim, California, when he took a step back and his left knee gave out. Ward fell to the mat in agony and his knee appeared to be dislocated.

Ward, 25, who is trained by International Boxing Hall of Famer Buddy McGirt, was unable to continue and referee Eddie Claudio waved off the fight at 1 minute.

Ward, who was 290-15 as an amateur, won 15 Irish National Championships, three gold medals at the European Amateur Championships (2017, 2015, 2011) and gold at the World Youth Championships (2010) and World Junior Championships (2009). He was also 8-1 in the World Series of Boxing.

What a shame. I've been following his amateur career for years and was really looking forward to seeing his as a pro.

I think he's done his knee before in the amateurs. I'm not sure if it's the same one.

It looks horrible. It reminds me of Simon Jones' knee injury in the Ashes some time back.

Yeh, exactly. That was just bloody unlucky.

I thought there was something off about his footwork. I just put it down to his own particular style but it looked a little unnatural at times. I didn't think much of it because fighters have their own idiosyncrasies. It's hard to explain but I wasn't surprised he went over on it like that because he puts pressure on that knee the way he fights, in a way that I haven't seen other fighters do. I'm not sure I'm making sense but that's what I saw anyway

He's done his knee before and I'm guessing its the same one. Knee injuries are never the same. He could go over on it again even if he surgically repairs it. If I was a promotor I wouldn't exactly be plowing money into Ward as an investment. Anyone know what his injury was exactly? His knee was absolutely deformed when he was on the canvas. Surely that needs surgery?

Well I just watched it, and well he was certainly in control and looked huge and had good punch form, one thing that stood out to me, is that for one of B and I's best point scorers of maybe all time, he landed practically no clean punches.

The knee was nasty though, no one can call phony on that injury

Fair play to Delgado, he never went crazy celebrating and he just shook his head like 'what was I supposed to do'
