Eusebio Pedroza: Where Do You Rank Him in the All-Time Featherweight Rankings?

Post by elmersalsa »

The great Eusebio Pedroza of Panama was to me the most COMPLETE FIGHTER that I have seen in my lifetime. He could do it all: box, slug it out, good chin, stamina, heart, will and determination.

Where do you rank this great boxer at Featherweight all time?

Pound per pound?

Like I said, I'd guess. Have to dig deeper. Attell, saldivar, Driscoll, kilbane, arguello, chocolate, etc... So many great fighters to separate their divisions is difficult on memory. Pedroza was a favorite of mine growing up. Best wins? Two highly disputed against lockridge, Ruben, laporte, underrated how he dismantled Ford after Patrick arguably beat sal. But canzoneri, even Lopez you have to look at. Freddie Miller, O'Toole,. Pretty stacked div.

Probably in the top 10. I think there's some fighters who fought at featherweight that I'd rank higher than him pound for pound like Arguello, Jofre, Nelson but his body of work and title reign give him the specific edge at 126.

It's hard to see him over the usual suspects like Pep, Saddler, Attell, Sanchez, Saldivar, Armstrong, Driscoll etc;

Welcome back, Chris!

In my estimation, a great fighter at 126.

I rated him in my all-time Featherweight dynamite dozen like this:
1. Willie Pep
2. Henry Armstrong
3. Sandy Saddler
4. Kid Chocolate
5. Salvador Sanchez
6. Battling Battalino
7. Freddie Miller
8. Abe Attell
9. Eusebio Pedroza
10. Alexis Arguello
11. Azumah Nelson
12. Vicente Saldivar

Dominant Champion in his prime. Very underrated and disliked by the American boxing press.

Eusebio Pedroza, the great champion, was a road warrior. He was expressionless, and had great mental concentration and poise fighting on the road. The most COMPLETE fighter that I have ever seen.

There's an article out there that Pedroza, on his own words, said that the great Salvador Sanchez didn't want to fight him. It seems to me that none of the WBC champions wanted a piece of him. He was high risk and low reward for a multi million dollar payday.

None of the wba and wbc champions were fighting each other. There was an organization feud. Surprised you don't remember that. Though you likely do and it doesn't fit your narrative as well. I liked pedrozas chances in that bout, sal obviously would have fought him.

I read an article in Pedroza's own words that Don King, Sanchez ' promoter at the time, told Pedroza that Sanchez didn't want to fight him.

So Elmer, being the most complete fighter in history would make him an underachiever?

Underachiever? I think the great Eusebio Pedroza did accomplished a lot in his boxing career. Twenty title defenses. Ten in opponents' backyards and 14 defenses on the road. Beat 4 world champions and 1 hall of fame boxer. A great career if you ask me.

The big question here is: was he better than Sanchez or viceversa? Otherwise, top ten at 126...easily.
